Government should have less hand in health care

On November 20, 2008
Yvette Piette, Madison

To the editor:

This is in response to Tony Magliano’s column in the November 6 edition of the Catholic Herald: “We the people must go beyond elections.”

Although I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Magliano’s statement that we the American people have given too much power to our government, I respectfully submit that he later contradicts himself in this same column. By implying that the U.S. government should enact universal health care, Mr. Magliano is supporting a policy that would hand over even more power to the government than it currently has. Health care and health insurance would become more efficient and affordable if our government had less of a hand in it, not more. A more sensible approach by our government to this issue would be to allow individuals to buy into the state health insurance that government employees enjoy.

Individual choice in health care would drive down costs and improve quality of care, and I encourage supporters of universal health care to research the effects that such a policy has had on those countries that have tried it.

Yvette Piette, Madison
