POYNETTE — St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Poynette celebrated the centennial of the dedication of the first Catholic Church in Poynette recently.
The parish was dedicated by Archbishop Sebastian Messmer of Milwaukee on February 10, 1908. Bishop Robert C. Morlino presided at a 4 p.m. Mass, followed by a dinner, on Sunday, Oct. 19.
By naming October as Respect Life Month, we emphasize learning about the many issues that tear down or build up the Culture of Life. In addition, we focus on the actions that positively or negatively affect this culture.
What is the Culture of Life? How do you know if you are tearing down or building up in your home, your school, or your work place? Some very simple measures are to celebrate life in our day to day living.
After many months of campaigning and millions of dollars spent, the finish line is in sight for the 2008 election season.

In 1972 Jim Croce recorded the song, “Time in a Bottle.” The lyrics of the song that especially spoke to me were, “But there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do, once you find them.” These words seemed prophetic. Jim Croce was killed in a plane accident on September 20, 1973.
Jim Croce’s death or any death reminds us of the fragility of life. Death reminds us Catholics that we are pilgrims on a journey through time to Eternity. Earth is our temporary home. Heaven is our Eternal Home. St. Paul urges us to run the race of life for the prize of Eternal Glory.
The Bishop William P. O’Connor Fourth Degree Assembly will be collecting money that will be used to purchase 15 to 20 wheelchairs for the Apostolate to the Handicapped.
MADISON — A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center for Chaplain Fr. Vincent Browne (Lt. Col. USAF Ret.), a priest of the Diocese of Madison, who died Sunday, Oct. 26.

MADISON — Theresa and Kevin Burke, the founders of Rachel’s Vineyard, were in Madison recently to offer training for priests, therapists, and other pro-life workers on the trauma of abortion and healing after abortion, and to train teams for Rachel’s Vineyard retreats.
BELOIT — A $5,000 grant received this past summer from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is being used for the youth justice project of Justice Overcoming Borders (JOB) in Beloit and the state-line area.
The grant’s purpose is to organize youth and adults to address the needs and aspirations of at-risk and disadvantaged youth in the state-line area, according to Tom Boswell, Evansville, JOB community organizer.
