John Philipp named Director of Finance for diocese

John Philipp

MADISON — Bishop Robert C. Morlino has announced that John Philipp has been named Director of Finance for the Diocese of Madison.

According to the Code of Canon Law in the Catholic Church, the bishop appoints a financial administrator of the diocese after consulting with the College of Consultors and the diocesan Finance Council. The financial administrator is to be an “expert in financial matters and of truly outstanding integrity.”

Bringing Catholics back home through music

MADISON — In the title song of Aaron Thompson’s most recent album, 10,000 Angels, the refrain’s lyrics speak of returning to God, saying, “You can come back today.”

He had written the song for the Catholics Come Home Campaign, an independent, non-profit charity aimed at welcoming those who have left the Church or anyone interested in becoming Catholic.

“I was at a concert recently in Georgia,” Thompson said, “and I had a guy come up afterwards in tears. He was Jewish, and he wanted to inquire into the RCIA process.

Primary election for Superintendent of Public Instruction

Update: The winners of the primary election February 17 were Tony Evers, the current deputy superintendent, and Rose Fernandez, Wisconsin Coalition of Virtual School Families president. The spring election will take place April 7. To watch or hear the State Superintendent of Public Instruction Candidate Debate, tune in Friday, March 20, at 7 p.m. to Wisconsin Public Television (PBS) or Wisconsin Public Radio (970 WHA-AM Madison or 91.3 WHHI Highland). The debate will be co-moderated by WPR’s Shawn Johnson and WPT’s Frederica Freyberg.

MADISON — On Tuesday, Feb. 17, voters in Wisconsin will be going to the polls for a primary election to narrow down the candidates for the position of state Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Five people are running for this non-partisan position. Two will be chosen to face off in the 2009 spring election on April 7.

Regarding freedom of religion and prayers at governmental occasions, with humility before God and asking forgiveness for our wrongs, we must calmly and accurately bear witness to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which includes, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press . . .”
