Baraboo school marks 100 years of Catholic education

BARABOO — Over 1,200 invitations were sent to past graduates, staff, and faculty for a centennial celebration and reunion that will take place at St. Joseph School on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The festivities will begin with Mass at 4 p.m. celebrated by Fr. Larry Bakke. Following Mass, all are invited to the school for supper, an open house, and entertainment. Alumni can take time to tour the school, laugh over memorabilia, and enjoy connecting with past acquaintances.

Remembering pre-born babies who have died

My family moved to Madison last June from St. Louis. We miscarried our fourth child this past January. She was eight weeks old.

Guest Column

I elected not to have a D & C, but to go home and miscarry naturally. This gave me time to research, “What is the Catholic response to miscarriage?”

The ethics of ‘correcting’ mitochondrial disease

Making Sense out of Bioethics column by Fr. Tad Pacholczyk

Mitochondria are small, elongated structures in a cell that produce energy. These “cellular batteries” contain their own small piece of DNA, separate from the rest of the cell’s DNA found in the nucleus.

When defects or mutations occur in this mitochondrial DNA, it can result in a number of diseases. In severe cases, children can be born blind, epileptic, unable to crawl, and may manifest severe neurological delay and die at an early age. No real therapies exist for most mitochondrial diseases beyond treating the symptoms.

Treinta y cinco años de sacerdote, 10 de obispo

Queridos amigos,

Providing hope for unborn children

editor's viewIn Wisconsin, the number of unborn children killed by abortion continues to decline. Last year, our state again experienced a drop in the number of abortions from the previous year.

The number of abortions was 8,229. Although that is still too many, it does represent a 62 percent decrease from the all-time high of 21,754 performed in 1980, reported Wisconsin Right to Life.

Thirty-five years a priest, 10 years a bishop

Bishop's Column logo

Dear Friends,

2009 is a very special year for me personally, as, on June 1st I celebrated 35 years as a priest and, just this week, on September 21, I celebrate 10 years as a bishop. I was ordained the Bishop of Helena, Montana, in the Cathedral Church of St. Helena on September 21, 1999, the Feast of St. Matthew.

Speaker addresses why — and how — to fight moral relativism

Abortion. Euthanasia. Pornography as art. We are constantly debating issues we know to be objectively wrong. Yet, time and again in our discussions, we hit a brick wall: “Well, that’s what you believe, but don’t force your opinions on me.”

‘40 Days’ vigil begins Sept. 23 in Madison

MADISON — The third 40 Days for Life prayer vigil to be held in Madison at the east side Planned Parenthood clinic will begin Wednesday, Sept. 23, but the annual event kicked off September 12 with a luncheon gathering at nearby Reindahl Park.

The 40 Days for Life ecumenical effort, echoed in more than 200 cities in-ternationally, draws at least two people each hour for nearly 2,000 volunteer-hours of around-the-clock prayer from September 23 to November 1 outside the abortion clinic on Orin Rd. in Madison.

Volunteers, many of whom sign up for multiple hours but also some who come as groups or only for the hour they can spare, spend the time praying for whose lives will be lost to abortion and those whose lives will be affected by it.
