We may not always be aware of them, but they are there: people living in poverty. They are hanging on by a thread, barely making ends meet. They are often too proud to reach out for help.

Catholic Schools Week: Dividends for Life
Each year, in late January we set aside a week to focus attention on, and to celebrate, our Catholic schools. This year Catholic Schools Week runs from Sunday, January 31, to Saturday, February 6, with the theme, “Dividends for Life: Faith, Knowledge, Discipline, Morals.”

Recycle the Warmth
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Recycle the Warmth blanket drive slated for January 29 to 31 will help provide warmth and comfort for local families struggling with poverty. The society is urging area residents to search closets — or use their checkbooks — to provide blankets and bedding.
NFP method now offered in diocese
The Ovulation Method of Natural Family Planning (NFP), as taught by the Family of the Americas Foundation (FAF), will be available in the Diocese of Madison beginning in February.

Fr. Nicholas Okere dies in Nigeria
OWERRI, Nigeria — Fr. Nicholas Okere, priest of the Archdiocese of Owerri in Nigeria, died unexpectedly recently.
Father Okere ministered in the Diocese of Madison from September 1999 to 2002.

In praise of family albums
I have recently received a most precious gift in the mail. It was sent by my niece, Lisa, who had just buried her father, Pete, my brother-in-law.
The moment I opened the outer box and saw the soiled, yellow-white box inside, I knew what it was: my mother’s photo album. Pictures from the first half of the 20th century!
