Retreat offers youth a chance to gain a listening heart

MADISON — “What do many of you listen to?” Bishop Robert C. Morlino asked during his homily at the Youth 2000 retreat February 27, naming off popular artists like Lady Gaga and Ludacris and gaining laughter from the youth.

Confirmed in faith universal and one

MADISON — Visitors to Wisconsin are often surprised and complimentary at how wonderful a place Wisconsin is to live. They take note of the strong sense of culture and history here, the natural beauty, and all that there is to do — both in winter and, especially, in summer.

Exploring the root causes of homelessness

MADISON — Lent is a time to consider what we do “for the least of our brothers.” Almsgiving is one of the traditional ways we act on our faith during Lent.

Lent: Time to slam the door in Satan’s face

This column is the bishop’s communication with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

Each year we are invited to reflect on the whole of our Lenten journey in the context of Jesus’ temptations in the desert. That’s a model, if you will, a paradigm, for what is supposed to happen during Lent. And, I am happy to say that I discovered again this year that, substantially, my reflections on this Gospel passage are in line with those of our Holy Father. I know that when I’m in communion with the Holy Father, by God’s grace and for the good of the diocese, I’m right on target.

Update: Food, funds are reaching orphanage in Haiti

Following is an update of a story that ran in the January 28 issue of the Catholic Herald about Pam Charles, a Beloit nurse and volunteer for Health Ministries for Haiti. She was at an orphanage in Haiti when the January 12 earthquake occurred.

BELOIT — According to recent information from the orphanage at Croix Des Bouquets, Beloit nurse Pam Charles said, school classes are still not in session due to the damage from the earthquake. She said some of the wooden pieces, used for school desks, were burned to use for firewood for cooking purposes.

Foster public policies that are ‘family friendly’

Eye on the Capitol by John Huebscher

Family, Community, and Participation is an important theme of Catholic social teaching. This theme reminds us of our need to foster public policies that are “family friendly.”

Policies that affirm and support parents in their role as the primary educators of their children certainly fall into this category. In recent weeks, the Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC) has given testimony on two proposals that offer such support to parents of school children.

Urge representatives to vote against Senate bill

To the editor:

You are urgently needed to contact Representative Ron Kind or Tammy Baldwin and urge them to vote against H.R. 3590, the Senate version of health care reform.  This bill contains a huge expansion of abortion by using taxpayer funds to pay for health care premium subsidies and to pay for abortions in Community Health Centers.

In addition, there are no adequate conscience protections for health care professionals and facilities that do not want to participate in abortions.

Generous response to Haiti relief: Catholic Relief Services is putting our donations to work

We can be proud of ourselves! People in the Diocese of Madison responded with an outpouring of financial support in the aftermath of the January 12th earthquake in Haiti.

As you can see by the chart accompanying this editorial, people in our diocese have donated over $547,000 to Haiti relief. Contributions have been sent to Catholic Relief Services (CRS), which was already on the ground in Haiti prior to the earthquake. CRS continues to deliver relief supplies to the Haitian people, but it is also working on long-term recovery plans for the country.
