MADISON — Incense. Trumpets. A procession of priests and bishops. Knights of Columbus in their colorful regalia. Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre in their black and white garb.

All these elements added to the solemnity of the ordination Mass celebrated on Friday, June 25, at St. Maria Goretti Church.

Signs of great joy

But while it was a very serious occasion marked by reverence and tradition, the Mass and ordination rite were also filled with signs of great joy as Deacons David A. Carrano and Gregory S. Ihm were ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Madison.

Marriage program: Strengthening Church’s vision of marriage

This past December, the United States bishops published a new pastoral letter on the topic of marriage, entitled “Marriage: Love & Life in the Divine Plan.”

In the document, the bishops celebrate married life and express their conviction that marriage is especially a blessing to the couple, their families, and society overall.

Oil spill: Responding with prayer and solidarity

Editorial logo

Ever since the April 20 explosion and fire on the BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, Americans have stood by, watching helplessly as millions of gallons of oil have poured into the Gulf each day.

We’ve observed the failed efforts of BP to stop the oil spill. We’ve seen marine animals covered with the globby black mess. We’ve heard stories of the economic hardships experienced by fishermen and other workers affected by the disaster.

It’s predicted that this man-made disaster will have far worse consequences than Hurricane Katrina five years ago. The Gulf area is still recovering from Katrina and it’s now dealing with the oil spill, with no end in sight.

Many of us continue to feel helpless in the face of this situation. What can we do? How can we help?

Reflections on ordination

Under the Gospel Book by Bishop Robert C. Morlino
This column is the bishop’s communication with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

Editor’s note: The following is an adapted reflection given by Bishop Robert C. Morlino on Friday, June 25, at the ordination of Fr. Gregory Ihm and Fr. David Carrano.

The ritual book tells the bishop to address the candidates for priesthood as my sons. And what an unbelievable gift and privilege it was for me to call Gregory and David, in light of the bond of priesthood, my sons.

Lest anyone be disappointed, I have three points that have to do with Rome, because this was the first time I have had the ordination of two men who have come back from Rome. And I thought it good to remind all of us what these new priests got out of Rome.
