Dear Friends,
The Apostolic and state visit of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, to the United Kingdom must be considered a very hopeful victory for Christ. This seems to be the general evaluation of those precious four days that many say have changed Great Britain.
What do all these terms mean?
In the last few years we have heard about clusters, merging, linkages, and partnerships. I’m confused — what do all these terms mean?
We all understand the serious reality of the priest shortage and how it affects parishes. The Diocese of Madison has taken measures to keep all parishes open for worship and in doing so new terms are being used. Basically, all these words describe different levels of unity and sharing between parishes and are wonderful examples of Catholics working together to solve very difficult problems.
Cluster: multiple parishes in a geographical location. All parishes of the diocese have been formed into clusters.
Autumn reminds us of St. Francis
We celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4. This is appropriate because Francis loved God’s creation.
During autumn, God creatively works through nature to convert fall’s leaves to a beautiful scarlet and gold. This change reminds us that God changed Francis from a carefree green youth into a committed Christ-like saint. His conversion invites us to ask God to also change us.
Through the ages, Catholics, non-Catholics, and non-Christians have loved Francis. He has influenced millions by his pure Christ-like goodness, love of creation, and joy.

Islam is not a religion that can tolerate other religions
To the editor:
In Fr. Peter Daly’s article (Catholic Herald September 16, 2010) on the intolerance that some Americans have for Muslims, he describes his cordial relationship with his Imam neighbor who gave him a copy of the Koran. Father Daly urges Americans not to blame Muslims for the actions of terrorists associated with Islam, saying, “We are not at war with Islam; we are at war with terrorists.”
Islamic religious freedom not being suppressed: But building a mosque near ground zero is not appropriate

With all due respect to Fr. Peter Daly (Catholic Herald, September 16, 2010), the “religious freedom” argument being used against those who oppose the building of the mosque near ground zero is a platitude that increasingly rings hollow. His comparison of this issue to the bigotry against Catholics in the 19th century strikes me simply as a false parallel.
Respecting life: Love without measure
Each year, the Catholic Church in the United States kicks off its Respect Life Program on the first Sunday of October, which is observed as Respect Life Month.
As we know, respecting human life should be something we do all year, day in and day out. However, setting aside a month to focus on respect for life gives all Catholics an opportunity to study, reflect, pray, and take action in a special way during October.
