Thanks for Latin Mass article

To the editor:

Thank you for printing the editorial, “Latin Mass appeal,” by Kenneth Wolfe from the New York Times. We have read many books and articles on the subject of the Latin Mass over the years, but it is difficult to recall one that is as concise and historically accurate as this one.

Popes, bishops, Vatican approve changes in liturgy

To the editor:

I regret that the Catholic Herald would lend its space to voices of calumny. Both Kenneth J. Wolfe and Jacek M. Cianciara made unsubstantiated statements about Cardinal Annibale Bugnini, a priest who served the Church at the request of Pope Pius XII, Pope John XXIII, and Pope Paul VI. The idea that he could make changes in the liturgy without those three popes understanding what he was doing is ridiculous and an insult to the popes themselves.

To name Cardinal Bugnini as the author of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy is strange indeed. It would be well to remember that that document was approved by public vote of the Council Fathers on Wednesday, December 4, 1963, by 2,147 Council Fathers voting “yes,” and four Council Fathers voting “no.” After the vote Pope Paul VI confirmed the vote in the following words:

Preserve some Latin words but offer Mass in vernacular

To the editor:

On Kenneth J. Wolfe’s article, “Latin Mass appeal” (Catholic Herald, February 11, 2010), I would like to make two comments.

When the language of the Mass was changed from Hebrew/Aramaic to Greek to suit the Greek worshipers, two Hebrew words were preserved: Amen and Alleluja. When later the Greek language yielded to Latin in Western Europe, three Greek words were preserved: Kyrie, Christe, eleison.

Atheists don’t like Mother Teresa stamp

The U.S. Postal Service will be honoring Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta in 2010 with a 44-cent stamp. It will go on sale on what would have been her 100th birthday on August 26.

“Her humility and compassion, as well as her respect for the innate worth and dignity of humankind, inspired people of all ages and backgrounds to work on behalf of the world’s poorest populations,” said the Postal Service in announcing the Mother Teresa stamp.

Ash Wednesday and a Lent for Priests

This column is the bishop’s communication with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

It was wonderful to witness and to hear of the strong turn-out of people at our Ash Wednesday Masses around the diocese. Such a turn-out is a hopeful sign that our people genuinely want to pursue the journey of holiness and conversion this Lent.

I share with you today three points that I made during my Mass on Ash Wednesday. The first point is regarding this, our Year for Priests, within the Church. I do think about the Year for Priests a lot, but I’m not sure that we’ve done everything that we can to help you think about it. I hope that you do think about it, though. My point is this: if it is the “Year for Priests,” and this “year” includes Lent, then this Lent is for priests.

Defend Life Rally held in Madison

Defend Life Rally goers bear signs outside the Madison Surgery Center at 1 S. Park St. on February 6 following a march from State St. in downtown Madison. The rally and march included peaceful confrontations with screaming pro-abortion advocates at the rally and later at the clinic. (Catholic Herald photo/Kat Wagner) To see more pictures, click here.

MADISON — Close to 500 pro-life advocates from around Wisconsin attended the Defend Life Rally on State Street’s Library Mall in downtown Madison February 6 and marched peacefully to the Madison Surgery Center (MSC) despite screaming pro-abortion advocates at both locations.

The rally, organized by Pro-Life Wisconsin and Vigil for Life of Madison, featured various pro-life speakers and served as both a recognition of successful efforts put forth by local pro-life advocates to prevent abortions at the Madison Surgery Center and as impetus for the 40 Days for Life vigil expected to begin Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, and for other pro-life events in the area.

The first Defend Life Rally in 2009 drew more than 800 people to protest the MSC board’s decision to begin performing abortions. Since that time, pro-life groups and demonstrators have maintained a persistent presence outside the site at 1 S. Park St. The MSC is jointly operated by Meriter Hospital, University Hospitals and Clinics, and the UW Medical Foundation.

“They thought we’d lose interest. They thought we’d forget. They thought we’d go away. My friends — have you lost interest? Have you forgotten? Do you plan on going away?” asked Steve Karlen, co-director of Vigil for Life. He received a resounding “no” from the crowd to each question.

Lent prepares us to renew our baptismal promises

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes by Fr. Donald Lange

Lent is a 40-day season of prayer, fasting, good works, and penance. Lent prepares us to renew our baptismal promises with deep faith at Easter when we celebrate the paschal mystery, the heart of our faith.

In the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy it says “Lent disposes the faithful, who more diligently hear the Word of God and devote themselves to prayer, to celebrate the Paschal mystery.”
