College student pedals in ‘Biking for Babies’ benefit ride

KAUKAUNA — When it comes to athletics and outdoor activities, Kevin Biese of Holy Cross Parish, here,  enjoys trying anything and everything. He plays volleyball, tennis, and basketball. His pastimes include biking, hiking, and swimming. Throw in support for a good cause and he is ready to push himself physically like never before in his life.

Biese, who will be a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is biking more than 800 miles in seven days to raise money for three pro-life charities. Along with four other cyclists, he is pedaling from Covington, La., to Champaign, Ill., as a part of Biking for Babies. Funds raised through donations will support a new Women’s Care Center in Madison, the Champaign Pregnancy Resource Center and Students for Life of Illinois. The target is $15,000.

Fr. Philip Grasso dies

CUBA CITY — Fr.  Philip Grasso, a priest of the Diocese of Madison, died Monday, July 18, at the Southwest Health Center Nursing Home in Cuba City, Wis. He was 92.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, 519 W. Roosevelt St., Cuba City, on Friday, July 22, at 11 a.m. Bishop Robert C. Morlino was the principal celebrant with Fr. John Norder as homilist.

Golfer wins, NBC loses

It was so refreshing to see Rory McIlroy win this year’s U.S. Open golf tournament in Bethesda, Md.

Of course, we would always like to have an American win this coveted trophy. But being of Irish descent myself, I was pleased to see McIlroy triumph.

In his first win in a major golf tournament, he broke 12 records. He is the youngest player to win the Open since Bobby Jones in 1923.

La Fiesta del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo es un día muy hermoso e importante para nosotros, y la realidad que celebramos ese día tiene tal impacto e nuestras vidas que el tema parece ser repetitivo. Espero me sepan perdonar si miro un poco hacia atrás a la gran Fiesta del Corpus Christi que celebramos el 26 de junio, y reitere algunos pensamientos que compartí en mi homilía de la Misa ese día.

De hecho, fui bendecido este año con la experiencia de la fiesta del Corpus Christi dos veces. Habiendo estado en Roma para dar unas conferencias a los seminaristas de nuestra diócesis y de todo Estados Unidos, pude estar en la celebración que presidió el Santo Padre en el día tradicional del jueves. Luego, tres días después, puede estar de nuevo en casa, en Madison, en donde la conferencia de nuestros obispos decidió mover la fiesta al domingo.

One nation under God

On Independence Day we celebrate the anniversary of the day that the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. We also express our admiration and gratitude for the brave men who risked their lives and fortunes to sign this great document.

Bishop Paul Swain once wrote that in his judgment the most famous words related to the Declaration of Independence are, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.”

One nation under God

The Pledge of Allegiance reinforces the Declaration’s statement that God is the source of our nation’s independence. In 1952, the Knights of Columbus urged Congress to introduce a resolution to add “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance. The resolution was introduced by Congressman Louis C. Rabaut of Michigan and adopted by both Houses of Congress. It was signed by President Eisenhower on Flag Day, June 14, 1954.

The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ is such a beautiful and important day for us, and the reality which we celebrate on that day has such an impact that its themes bear repeating. I hope you’ll forgive me if I look back a bit to the great Feast of Corpus Christi, which we celebrated on June 26, and reiterate a few thoughts which I shared in my Stational Mass homily.
