To the editor:
I am writing in response to the letter from John Murphy in the February 9 edition of the Catholic Herald regarding President Obama being called “the food stamp President.”
Mr. Murphy needs to know the command to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the sick was given to the Church, not the government.
The government has taken over this duty for several reasons. Church membership has decreased, and so have donations. When the Church provides support for a person, they are also called to guide the recipient in repentance with a genuine concern for their eternal soul. That’s the rub.
The “Godless” want to be supported and affirmed in their way of life regardless of the consequences to body or soul. The government performs this deed not as an act of charity nor with a concern for the recipient’s soul, but for the short-term gain of buying votes.
Mr. Murphy states “President Obama is doing the Christian thing . . . .” Christ said they will know you are mine by your works. The Church has taught for some time now that supporting abortion is not a work of the child of God. President Obama’s record on abortion is well documented.
