On Friday, May 23, Bishop Robert C. Morlino will ordain three men to the transitional diaconate during a Mass at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center in Madison.

‘Celebration of Life’ held
MADISON — If there were one word to describe the recent “Celebration of Life” event at the Alliant Energy Center, it would be “thanks.”
The evening had a mood of gratitude from both those who put on the benefit dinner and those who attended.
The event was an opportunity for Our Lady of Hope Clinic and the Women’s Care Center of Madison (WCC) to show how they have worked to build a “Culture of Life” in Dane County.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run
In 1960, Squires of the Knights of Columbus in Mexico, the United States, and Canada came up with the idea of honoring Mary with a rose. Mary used the rose as a sign of her appearance at Guadalupe.
They started at London in Ontario, Canada, and ended at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico, presenting Mary with a live rose.
The following year, both a bronze rose and a silver rose were used. The decision was made to use a silver rose in the future. The silver rose is crafted from a real rose.
Farewell planned for Beloit Sister
BELOIT — A farewell reception for Sr. Hedwig Clavijo will take place on Saturday, May 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Jude Parish Hall. St. Jude Marian Guild President Sandy Sarnow said the parish group is sponsoring the farewell.
Sister Hedwig, soon to be 82 years old, has been a member of the Auxiliaries of the Blessed Sacrament for more than 50 years. Presently, she serves at the Beloit convent. She is returning to the motherhouse at Chia which is near Bogata, in her native Colombia, South America.
Madison Catholic Woman’s Club rejoices in 100 years
“This is the day the Lord has made. Let us be glad and rejoice in it!”
Barbara Kutchmarek quoted this passage from Psalm 188 as she greeted those attending the Madison Catholic Woman’s Club’s 100-Year Anniversary Celebration held May 6 at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center.
The value of cemeteries: Remembering those who have gone before us
Maybe I’m a little strange, but I have always enjoyed visiting cemeteries. I still have memories from my childhood of walking around the small country cemetery when we visited my grandmother’s home not too far away.
It was interesting to see the names of our relatives on the tombstones. Some of the monuments even had pictures of the deceased and information about them. Rather then being scary, the cemetery gave me a sense of peace and connection with those who lived before me.
Connection with family members
My father died when I was 16 years old as a result of a heart attack. We didn’t have a family plot in La Crosse, where I was born (my parents both came from other parts of the state). I recall helping my mother select a plot and a tombstone for the grave. Since my father loved praying the Rosary, we had a Rosary engraved on his monument.
In the years since, I have been doing genealogy research on both sides of my family. During that research, I have visited cemeteries where my ancestors are buried. It has been such a joy to be able to pray at the graves of my grandparents and great-grandparents. Fortunately parishes have been kind enough to let me search through their records, some of which are in Latin (I’m thankful for my high school Latin classes).

Dodgeville students return to ‘Odyssey’ world finals
DODGEVILLE — For the second year in a row, students at St. Joseph School in Dodgeville will be taking some of their skills and talents to a worldwide stage.
Two teams from the school are advancing to the Odyssey of the Mind world finals set to take place at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, from May 28 to May 31.
More than 800 teams from around the world will compete in the 35th annual competition which, according to its website, “emphasizes creativity and teamwork and has grown into the largest international creative problem-solving competition worldwide.”
Memorial Day Masses in the diocese
A Memorial Day Mass will be held at Resurrection Cemetery Chapel, Madison, on Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. Bishop Robert C. Morlino will be the principal celebrant and homilist. Area priests will serve as concelebrants. Knights of Columbus will serve as honor guard. The Mass will be held outdoors, but in case of rain, Mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 405 S. Owen Dr. Refreshments will follow Mass.
St. Peter School to hold open house
MIDDLETON — St. Peter Catholic Elementary School will be hosting an open house event on Wednesday, May 28, at 6:30 p.m.
The event is open to all current and prospective families interested in learning how St. Peter Catholic School promotes a culture of scholarship, service, and salvation.
