Remembering the communion of saints

When we used to say the Apostles Creed at Mass (the Nicene Creed is now the norm), we said we believed in the “communion of saints.” For many of us, this was a phrase we recited so often that we didn’t really think about what it means.

As we prepare to celebrate All Saints’ Day on November 1 and All Souls’ Day on November 2, it is an opportunity to consider how we are united with the living and the dead.

Patron’s relics leave lasting impression at St. Maria Goretti Parish

MADISON — “Wow! What a 23 hours with the relic of St. Maria Goretti’s body in our parish and our church,” wrote Msgr. Michael Burke, pastor at St. Maria Goretti Parish in Madison, in his parish bulletin.

Relics of the parish’s patroness were at the parish from the morning of October 16 to the morning of October 17. More than 13,000 people from 11 states were estimated to have venerated the relics. According to the parish, there were two medically confirmed healings.

Mass for deceased bishops and priests of Diocese of Madison

MADISON — Bishop Robert C. Morlino will celebrate a special Requiem Mass for deceased priests and bishops of the Diocese of Madison. November is a month when Catholics pray in a special way for the repose of the dead and, by God’s will, for the rapid entrance into heaven of the poor souls.

On Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Bishop O’Connor Center, Bishop Morlino, with clerical and lay ministers, will celebrate a Pontifical Requiem Mass “at the Throne” in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

Thousands venerate relics of St. Maria Goretti in Madison

It was a birthday party unlike any other.

“This has been unbelievable . . . the greatest experience ever for this parish.”

Those words from Msgr. Michael Burke, pastor of St. Maria Goretti Parish in Madison, are the simplest way to sum up the 24-hour period in which the relics of St. Maria Goretti were at the parish from the morning of October 16 — the 125th anniversary of her birth — to the morning of October 17.

100,000 steps

Fonder Ponders column by Jackson Fonder

As an avid long-distance runner, this is by far my favorite time of the year to run.

On most early mornings, I can be found on the trails of the many parks around south central Wisconsin.

Through the years, I have had many opportunities to run in some unique and stunning landscapes around the world. For me, running is not just physical, but helps keep me grounded mentally and spiritually.

Choir’s mini-tour is a joyful hymn of praise

ESCANABA, Mich. — Despite gray skies and cold, blustery winds, the Madison Diocesan Choir’s recent mini-tour of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP) will be remembered as a joyful hymn of praise, a wonderful weekend of friendship and spiritual renewal.

Perhaps more so than any other trip, members not only sang beautifully, they lived the music, embodying John Rutter’s For the Beauty of the Earth and Harold W. Friedell’s Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether.

The mystery of male-female complementarity

James Parker came out at age 17 and later entered into a relationship with another man.

He worked as a gay activist for a while, but his personal experiences of intimacy and human sexuality eventually led him to grasp that “same-sex marriage just doesn’t exist; even if you want to say that it does.”
