(Pbro. José Eugenio Hoyos — Diócesis de Arlington, Va.)

Entrusting the Year of Mercy to Mary

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

It is no coincidence that Pope Francis designated that the Year of Mercy should begin on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated on December 8.

In his announcement of the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said, “I am convinced that the whole Church will find in this jubilee the joy needed to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of God, with which all of us are called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time.

“From this moment, we entrust this Holy Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she might turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey.”

Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration to be held at Cathedral Parish

MADISON — St. Raphael Cathedral Parish will hold its annual celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Holy Redeemer Church, 120 W. Johnson St., on December 11 and 12.

While Mary has long been the patron saint of Mexico, St. John Paul II proclaimed her the Patroness of the Americas in 1999. Juan Diego, to whom Mary appeared in 1531, was canonized in 2002, making him the first Amerindian saint.

Today people across Latin America — not only Mexicans — venerate Our Lady of Guadalupe, including many Latin American immigrants in the United States.
