SUN PRAIRIE — It was time for a birthday party 125 years in the making.
October 12, 2017, marked the quasquicentennial anniversary of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School in Sun Prairie.
To celebrate, as had been done on other milestone anniversaries, the students lined up in the numbers of “1,” “2,” and “5” for a picture showing “125,” to celebrate the anniversary.

As many Catholics know, the Second Vatican Council famously referred to the liturgy as the “source and summit of the Christian life.” And following the prompts of the great figures of the liturgical movement in the first half of the 20th century, the Council Fathers called for a fuller, more conscious, and more active participation in the liturgy on the part of Catholics.
FORT ATKINSON — St. Joseph Parish and School will host a 40 Hours Devotion.
This devotion dates back and was developed during the Middle Ages, after the Feast of Corpus Christi was extended to the Universal Church.
Corpus Christi is known for its street processions with the Blessed Sacrament, even in our own time. St. Philip Neri and St. Ignatius adopted the 40 Hours Devotion in reparation for sin, which brought many blessings and conversions.
WATERTOWN — The Catholic community in Watertown (St. Bernard and St. Henry Parishes) is excited to be welcoming international speaker, author, and evangelist Chris Stefanick and his REBOOT! LIVE! event on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Watertown High School gymnasium.

During October, which is observed as Respect Life Month in the U.S. Catholic Church, we publish a number of articles in the Catholic Herald about issues dealing with respect for life at all stages.
Perhaps one of the most difficult issues to discuss is the death penalty. If we admit it, I think many of us subscribe to the Old Testament belief in “an eye for an eye” when it comes to punishing those who harm others.
If someone murders another person, we may feel the death penalty is justified. After all, the murderer took someone’s life, so his life must be taken, too.
What’s wrong with this point of view? Quite a bit, if we start to look at it carefully.
“Rural life is still the backbone of America,” said Jim Ennis, executive director of Catholic Rural Life (CRL) and president of International Catholic Rural Association (ICRA), as he addressed a group of about 50 people at St. Joseph Parish in Dodgeville on October 1.

If someone’s house was on fire, would you pour gasoline on it? Well, the answer is obvious: Of course you wouldn’t.
Yet that is very similar to what the United States and many other more economically developed nations are doing.
Despite the tragic fact that approximately 40 current armed conflicts worldwide are causing over 150,000 deaths annually, countless serious injuries, untold destruction, and 28,300 people per day fleeing from their homes, many of the wealthiest countries continue to pour flammable weapons into these volatile conflicts. MONONA — “Hello, we’re from Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Monona. We understand that you recently moved into the area. We just wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood.”
That greeting — along with an apple pie, a bulletin, and a smile — are what the parish’s “Apple Pie Ambassadors” have given out nearly 50 times since May.

Darren Aronofsky’s latest film Mother! has certainly stirred up a storm, and no wonder. It features murder, point-blank executions, incinerations, and the killing and devouring of a child. I know: pleasant evening at the movies.
Mother! will seem just deeply weird unless you see it as a fairly straightforward allegory. Once you crack the code, it will make a certain sense, though the message it is trying to convey is, at best, pretty ambiguous.
WATERTOWN — Watertown Catholics celebrated the grand reopening of St. Bernard Church on September 17.
Boasting an iconic 193-foot steeple since 1873, and celebrated as the tallest structure in Watertown, St. Bernard has been one of the city’s most identifiable treasures.
