George Weigel’s Lessons in Hope

George Weigel’s latest book, Lessons in Hope: My Unexpected Life with St. John Paul II, is the third panel in a great triptych he has composed in honor of the most consequential Catholic figure of the second half of the 20th century.

While the first two books — Witness to Hope and The End and the Beginning — are marked by careful analysis and thousands of footnotes, this last volume is more personal, filled with anecdotes and stories about the author’s many encounters with John Paul over the years.

Keep the dream alive at Camp Gray

It all started with a parish priest’s simple dream in 1953, recounts the history of Camp Gray.

Msgr. Francis Gray was pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Baraboo. He dreamed of a place “where youths would be free and away from the temptations of the streets; where they could enjoy nature and become acquainted with it firsthand . . . a place where they could commune, under supervision, with their Creator and away from paths so frequently leading to delinquency.”

Dream becomes reality

So, Monsignor Gray scouted out potential sites but became enamored of an unoccupied, uncultivated 100-acre wooded site about eight miles northwest of Baraboo.

Beloit students ‘plant’ Pinwheels for Peace

BELOIT — On September 21, Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School children took part in an international art project, Pinwheels for Peace, by “planting” pinwheels with messages of peace in front of their school and church.

Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Fla., as a way for students to express their feelings about what is going on in the world and in their lives.

Program on human trafficking to be held on October 19

PALMYRA — Sr. Carol Haanen, a member of A New Genesis Community, will speak on “Trafficking, It Is Real” at the fall Jefferson Vicariate meeting at St. Mary Church here Thursday, Oct. 19.

The meeting starts at 11 a.m. with registration, followed by recitation of the Rosary at 11:45, the celebration of Mass at 12 noon, lunch at 1 p.m., and the program at 2 p.m.

Public Rosary Crusade in Green Lake

GREEN LAKE — In this year of the centennial celebration of Fatima, Rosary Rallies will take place throughout the world.

The Council of Catholic Women of Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Green Lake is sponsoring the Public Square Rosary Crusade under the leadership of America Needs Fatima. It will take place at 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Deacon Mills Park, downtown Green Lake, corner of Mill and South Sts.
