Spring Fling fundraiser benefits Beloit school

BELOIT — Among one-of-a-kind items to be separately auctioned at the OLA Spring Fling, a main fundraiser for Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) Grade School, are two wooden benches festooned with handprints of 3-4K students and a Bible verse.

Each school classroom chose an original project to contribute to the auction.

The event takes place this coming Saturday, April 29, at La Casa Grande Restaurant in Beloit. Cocktails are served at 5 p.m. followed by dinner, entertainment, silent auction, and a live auction, which includes a signed Green Bay Packers football.

Voting underway to name new homeless day resource center

MADISON — Voting on a name for the new homeless day resource center is now underway. Four finalists are in the running: The Opportunity Place, The Net, The Beacon, and Turning Point Center.

From all around Dane County, people submitted ideas for what to name the center that is under construction in Madison at 615 E. Washington Ave.

Schools, faith centers, clubs, organizations, and individuals submitted ideas for a name. Those who would be using the center were included as well. Bethel Lutheran Church provided its homeless guests with an opportunity to submit ideas offline.

The Case for Christ and evangelization

The Case for Christ is a film adaptation of Lee Strobel’s best-selling book of the same name, one that has made an enormous splash in Evangelical circles and beyond. It is the story of a young, ambitious (and atheist) reporter for the Chicago Tribune, who fell into a psychological and spiritual crisis when his wife became a Christian.

The scenes involving Lee and his spouse, which play out over many months of their married life, struck me as poignant and believable — and I say this with some authority, having worked with a number of couples in a similar situation.

Let’s make every day an Earth Day

We in Wisconsin should especially appreciate Earth Day because it was started by Gaylord Nelson when he was a U.S. senator from Wisconsin.

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans crowded streets, parks, and auditoriums to celebrate the first Earth Day. They called for a healthy, sustainable environment. Earth Day’s time had come.

Below is the full text of Bishop Robert C. Morlino’s Homily at the Chrism Mass, Tuesday, April 11, 2017:

What a wonderful day to be together, preparing to celebrate the great mysteries of our redemption and actually initiating those mysteries in our celebration on Sunday, Palm Sunday, and again tonight.

Infant memorial service at St. Mary’s

MADISON –Any loss is difficult, but the loss of life during pregnancy or shortly after birth can be particularly painful for families. On Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m., St. Mary’s Hospital will host a public infant loss memorial ceremony. This public memorial hopes to offer families the chance to honor those lives lost too soon, while finding fellowship with others who have experienced similar loss.

“I think the service provides closure and hope. Those are the two big things,” says Amy Helt, an RN on Birth Suites and this year’s Bereavement Committee chair. “We want to support these families in every way that we can. Not all families are willing or know how to have a service of their own. These parents are not expecting to have their child pass before them.”
