Jesus reminds us to welcome strangers

We just observed Thanksgiving, the holiday started by the Pilgrims in 1621.

As we know, the Pilgrims emigrated to the Plymouth colony in Massachusetts and shared a harvest feast with the Native American Indians who had helped them.

Why they came

The Pilgrims came from England to America primarily to be able to practice their religious faith freely.

Over the centuries, people from many other parts of the world have come to the United States. My own ancestors hailed primarily from Ireland, Germany, and Belgium.

DEFOREST/EAST BRISTOL — St. Olaf Parish in DeForest and St. Joseph Parish in East Bristol are planning an Advent parish mission.

Festival of Lessons and Carols in Baraboo

BARABOO — An Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” will be held on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, 304 East St., Baraboo.

All are invited to prepare during this hectic season by taking one hour to spend with the Lord. Come and pray the prophetic promises of salvation, using the ancient “O Antiphons.” These have been sung with the Canticle of Mary since the sixth century.

Black Elk and the call for catechists

I write these words as the annual November meeting of the United States bishops comes to a close. We bishops discussed many significant matters — from racism and immigration to the liturgy for the baptism of children.

But I would like to emphasize one theme in particular that came up frequently in our conversations, namely, the catechesis of our young people. I have a rather intense personal interest in the topic since, at the conclusion of this gathering, I officially became chairman of the bishops’ Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis.

Knowing your faith: What does it mean to be a ‘practicing Catholic’?

Knowing Your Faith column

John Joy

You might run into the term “practicing Catholic” in various contexts: if you teach in a Catholic school, for example, or if you serve as a catechist in your parish, or as a Confirmation sponsor or a godparent, you are supposed to be a “practicing Catholic”. But what does that mean exactly?

According to the Wisconsin Catholic Conference’s Standards for Educators in Catholic Schools and Parishes, it means: “a Catholic in good standing who participates fully in the worship and life of the Church, and who understands and accepts the teachings of the Church and moral demands of the Gospel, as articulated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.”

Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica

Word on Fire
Fr. Steve Grunow

This month, the Church remembers the dedication of the great basilica church of St. John Lateran in Rome. The Lateran Basilica is the cathedral church of the Holy Father as he is bishop of Rome. The magnificent building stands on land that was given to the bishops of Rome by the Emperor Constantine.
