Easter invites us to be witnesses of the Risen Christ

A boy returned from Catechism class where he learned about Jesus’ resurrection.

During his walk home, he stopped by a religious goods store to study a window display of a huge cross with an image of the crucified Jesus nailed to it. An elderly man who walked with crutches joined him. The man seemed confused as he stared at the crucifix.

Christ proves how much he loves us on Good Friday

On Thursday evening, Jesus retreated from the upper room and went to a nearby garden to pray.

An agonizing emotion came over him as he awaited his fate. After an hour or so, he heard men talking in the distance. He looked up, and there was Judas leading a group of soldiers. They came toward him and Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss. The soldiers arrested him immediately and brought him before Pilate. He was falsely accused and condemned to be tortured.

Fr. Jacques Philippe gives St. Thérèse Lecture

MADISON — For the people of the Diocese of Madison who have read the books Searching For and Maintaining Peace, Interior Freedom, and Time for God, the night of March 20 was something they had been waiting for.

The author of those works, their spiritual guide while making their way through the pages, spoke to them, personally.

A thoughtful case for priestly celibacy

This article is the first of a two-part series.

There is a very bad argument for celibacy which has reared its head throughout the tradition and which is, even today, defended by some. It runs something like this: married life is morally and spiritually suspect; priests, as religious leaders, should be spiritual athletes above reproach; therefore, priests shouldn’t be married.

Be defenseless like Jesus was in His Passion

This column is the bishop’s communication with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

Dear Friends,

This past Sunday was Palm Sunday, and by the time you read this it will likely be in the midst of the Sacred Triduum or even in the glorious season of Easter.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I feel as if this Lenten journey sped by unbelievably fast. And so (it seems to me) that all of a sudden here we are, in the midst of Holy Week.

If you read this in time, I do want to make a pitch for you — insofar as it is possible — to make an effort to attend the most important liturgy in the Church calendar, which occurs on Holy Saturday night.

The Easter Vigil is the pinnacle of our liturgical year, as we walk through salvation history and proclaim once again the glorious news that we have a Savior!
