Celebrating Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, including in schools in the Diocese of Madison. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2019 is January 27 to February 2. The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2019 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.”

Young Jesuits, justice, and evangelization

While I was in Chicago for the Christmas break, I had a wonderful meeting with around 30 young Jesuits, all in their “pre-tertianship” period of formation. This means that these men had already passed through their lengthy education in philosophy and theology and had been involved for some time in a ministry of the Jesuit order.

The group I addressed included high school teachers, university professors, journal editors, and doctoral students — and almost all of them were ordained priests. After a simple lunch of soup and sandwiches, we plunged into conversation.

My 12 years of education at Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and Aquinas High School in La Crosse prepared me well for life.

I received an excellent academic education, but more importantly, I learned about my Catholic faith and how to put it into practice in serving others.

Madison Catholic Woman’s Club to hold baby shower meeting

MIDDLETON — All women of the Diocese of Madison are invited to join Madison Catholic Woman’s Club (MCWC) members at their annual baby shower lunch meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2015 Parmenter St., Middleton.

Rosary and Mass begin at 10:40 a.m. followed by lunch and program. Marge Fenelon, nationally known speaker and author of several books on Marian devotion and Catholic spirituality, and a consecrated member of the Apostolic Movement of Schoenstatt, will present the program, “Our Catholic Love Stories: Evangelization and Apologetics.”

JANESVILLE — Sr. Lauretana Gorman, OP, will be retiring at the end of January after 62 years of consecrated Religious Life as a Sinsinawa Dominican and nearly 24 years of service at St. John Vianney Parish in Janesville.

In appreciation of her lifetime of service and many years spent at the parish, St. John Vianney Parish is hosting a retirement celebration during the weekend of January 26 to 27.
