Join Bishop Hying on pilgrimage to view ‘Angels Unawares’ sculpture and celebrate Mass for refugees and exiles

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — For centuries the Church has been an important patron of the arts. Art is a beautiful way to teach our history and beliefs.

This method of teaching continues with a new sculpture, “Angels Unawares,” created by Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz.

This sculpture was commissioned by the Vatican and is near St. Peter’s Square. It depicts 140 nearly life-sized refugees on a small boat that is 20 feet long.

You can have a chance to see and be inspired by the second cast of this art piece with a bus tour to the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis on Monday, Aug. 16.

Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison will accompany this tour and celebrate Mass in the basilica.

“I encourage you to join us for a one-day pilgrimage to the Twin Cities to view the ‘Angels Unawares’ sculpture which movingly depicts the plight of refugees and exiles in our world,” said Bishop Hying.

“This day offers us a beautiful opportunity to pray for and to be in solidarity with all those who suffer injustice, violence, and displacement.”
There will be two departure sites: Ss. Anthony and Philip Parish, 726 Main St., Highland at 6:15 a.m. and Holy Name Heights, 702 S. High Point Rd. in Madison at 7 a.m.

A light breakfast and box lunch will be provided.

The cost per person is $55.

Registration deadline is Sunday, Aug. 1.
