The Almighty has done great things for us

Guest Column

On behalf of Bishop Robert C. Morlino and all our seminarians, I would like to congratulate Deacons David Johannes and Mark Miller on their upcoming ordinations to the priesthood.

The entire Diocese of Madison rejoices because the Lord has shown us great favor in calling these two men to be numbered amongst the Levites. I also want to extend our congratulations to Deacons Vince Brewer and Garrett Kau who were ordained to the transitional diaconate in May. We wish you all fruitful ministry in the Lord’s vineyard.

God works in our midst

Ordination of men to the priesthood is a good reminder to us of how God continues to work in our midst. The Holy Spirit working through the bishop, by his imposition of hands and prayer of ordination, raises these men to become in effect “Alter Christus.”

Making America truly beautiful

One of America’s greatest blessings is the Declaration of Independence. Its preamble reads, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

For years, America failed to live up to some of the noble principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence. One of these failures was tolerating legalized slavery. In 1865 the 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolished slavery as a legal institution. But after slavery was abolished, many former slaves were denied some of their God-given rights in other ways.

For years women were also denied the right to vote. In August of 1920, 144 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.

Moving parents to another city

Ask Jean by columnist Jean MuellerQ My mother lives in northern Illinois. This is home, where we grew up. My mom is in her late 80s, dad died several years ago. My mother gave up the family home and moved into an apartment and has been doing okay, but recently she has been telling me how she is losing so many of her friends. She feels alone.

I am thinking about asking her to move in with me. My brother and sister live in California and Georgia and I know she would not want to live in either of those states.

I wonder if living with me would help her feel less lonely and help me feel less guilty about not always being there for her. (From a daughter in Wausau).

Good fathers plant eternal memories in our hearts

I remember how Dad liked to plant a garden. First, he plowed and harrowed God’s good earth. This made the soil more receptive to receive and nourish seeds.

Next, he skillfully tied a string between two stakes to help make the rows even. We children watched with awe as he reverently planted seeds in the garden’s rich soil. This was sacred time.

We waited patiently for plants to push through the soil. Finally, one memorable day we discovered a shoot that had risen from the earth. We joyfully raced to be first to share the good news. Now whenever I see a garden, I think of Dad.

Serviendo al mundo con la Verdad

Sabemos que el Espíritu Santo preside la celebración de esta noche y que en tan solo algunos minutos, el Espíritu Santo va a derramarse en sus almas y los va a transformar, Vince y Garrett, en la persona de Jesucristo, el siervo. Será un cambio de por vida al nivel más profundo en sus almas y cuando se vayan a dormir serán muy distintos a como eran esta mañana al levantarse. Y si estuvieron nerviosos por esto durante este día, eso desaparecerá, ya que el Espíritu Santo tomará como morada lo más profundo de sus almas de una manera totalmente nueva. ¡Y sin duda eso es un asunto de muchísima importancia!

En la segunda lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles (Hech. 8, 26-40), escuchamos el pasaje del eunuco etíope que escribe el profeta Isaías, y hablando de Jesús, el siervo sufriente. Es claro que la identidad del diaconado tiene todo que ver con ser siervo, siervo de la Palabra y siervo de la caridad. Es una descripción muy interesante la que tenemos sobre el servicio de Jesús, esta descripción del siervo sufriente.

Proteger la libertad más alta de todas

Queridos amigos:

Al celebrar el Memorial Day (Día de la Memoria) esta semana, entiendo que nuestros pensamientos y oraciones estuvieron, y están, muy cerca a nuestros hombres mujeres que tan generosa y valientemente sirvieron en las fuerzas armadas, y con aquellos que han visto el rostro de Cristo, especialmente aquellos que llegaron hasta el sacrificio supremo.

Luchar por nuestra libertad

Nunca olvidaremos que ellos lucharon y están luchando por nuestra libertad. Ellos creen que nuestra libertad es algo por lo que vale la pena vivir y morir.

Ese testimonio en pos de la libertad me hace considerar lo que verdaderamente es la libertad. Es difícil de creer, por ejemplo, que nuestros serviciales hombres y mujeres estén dispuestos a dar sus vidas para que alguien elija ver pornografía, o intoxicarse irresponsablemente, o consumir drogas. En nuestra cultura estas conductas con frecuencia son usadas para hablar del sentimiento de libertad, como si nuestra cultura hubiera abrazado la convicción de que somos libres al elegir cualquier cosa, incluyendo el mal.
