Happy New Year

Guest Column

When you read the title of this column, you probably thought I was several weeks ahead of myself or that a little dementia had set in.

Well, I know what date it is, and I am not losing my mind, yet! The new liturgical year will begin on December 1 and, just like many people make resolutions to improve their lives at the start of the calendar year, the Season of Advent presents us with an opportunity to reflect on the spiritual aspect of our lives.

Amendment preserves long-standing protections

Eye on the Capitol by Kim Wadas

Abortion proponents raised a public outcry after passage of the House health care bill earlier this month.

They criticized action taken by 240 members of the House of Representatives to approve an amendment offered by Representative Bart Stupak (D-Michigan). The Stupak amendment maintains a “status quo” approach to the federal funding of abortion.

The inclusion of the Stupak amendment in the House bill shocked those who would like taxpayers to pay for abortion coverage. Their reaction has been to misrepresent the amendment’s impact by suggesting that it will reach beyond current law.

They are wrong.

Take a stand for life and God-centered medicine

To the editor:

The health care reform debate now moves to the Senate. If Wisconsin Senators Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl want to learn about real health care, than I suggest they research a small religious order in Los Angeles called the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart.

There are still concerns about health care reform

To the editor:

Lately, I have been reluctant to even identify myself as a Catholic. Friends of mine in other denominations were already warning their members during last year’s election that Obama is a threat to Christianity in this country, but many Catholics believed he was not as bad as his record showed.

Share Your Faith Campaign

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

On the weekend of November 21st and 22nd we will be faced with an unique opportunity to assist, once again, some very specific brothers and sisters in need, by way of the national “Share your Faith Campaign” (also known generally as the CCHD Collection). With this year’s portion of the funds collected for national impact we, as a diocese, will be reaching out to the elderly and sick of our society, particularly those served by the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Nurse comments on ectopic pregnancy

To the editor:

I would like to comment on Fr. Tad Pacholczyk’s article on ectopic pregnancy in the October 22, 2009, issue. As an RN I have over 18 years of experience in obstetrics and gynecology.

Ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the uterus) is the leading cause of maternal death in the first trimester. Sadly, this is a nonviable pregnancy and the embryo cannot be saved. At times the embryo will be spontaneously expelled and at other times medical intervention is required. The procedure depends on the clinical situation and location of the pregnancy. In early detection Methotrexate is the least invasive intervention.

Archbishop-designate Listecki: ‘an instrument of God’s presence’

ST. FRANCIS — His résumé might give the impression that Milwaukee’s 11th archbishop is driven: captain of his high school tennis team, basketball coach, degrees in civil and Church law, 24 years in the Army Reserve, moral theology professor, parish priest, pastor, and bishop. But he doesn’t view it that way.

“I don’t see myself as driven; I see myself as responding to needs. I’ve been the proverbial ‘If you want something done, ask a busy man.’ A busy man or woman will find time to get it accomplished,” Archbishop-designate Jerome E. Listecki told the Milwaukee Catholic Herald Saturday, Nov. 14, the day his appointment to Milwaukee was announced.
