St. Dennis Parish burns mortgage, dedicates garden

MADISON — In their new Celebration of Life garden, outside the front doors of the church, parishioners of St. Dennis Parish watched as the papers for their mortgage — fully paid — were burned in a ceremony that is the dream of many a homeowner.

St. Dennis Church was built in the 1980s, a permanent structure to replace the temporary church built when the parish was founded in 1956. It incorporated the temporary church, which formed the sacristy, chapel, and social area, into its larger structure.

What about civil rights today?

Months ago I had a conversation with my father that will stick in my memory forever. I told him Barack Obama was a lock to be our next president.

Guest Column

My father who was born in 1940 and raised me to believe all people were created equal regardless of their skin color told me, “I don’t believe the people of the United States will elect an African American in my lifetime.”

Knights’ mission vital today

To the editor:

I was very pleased to read the article in the Madison Catholic Herald about Bishop Robert C. Morlino addressing the Knights and Ladies of the North Central Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem at the recent annual meeting of the Order held in Milwaukee on “Knights and Ladies as  Moral Force in Society” (October 23, 2008, issue).

All Catholics must follow basic tenets of the Church

To the editor:

This is in response to the “letter of protest” recently published in the Wisconsin State Journal. This letter was written by priests, religious, and laity who openly challenged the judgment and authority of Bishop Morlino.

Bishops should dialogue with people they serve

To the editor:

A mid-October poll by the Pew Research Center shows that, nationally, 55 percent of Catholics are supporting Obama compared to 35 percent for John McCain. One would guess that the proportion in Madison is the same or even somewhat higher, given the moderate to progressive politics of most Catholics in the diocese.

Recognizing the value of Catholic schools

Our Catholic Schools by Michael LancasterMy wife and I live in a small village with a small Catholic parish and no Catholic school. Our children, however, all attend Catholic schools.

Of course, this means a lot of driving, which is a cost in both gas and hours spent in the car each week. Everyone else in our parish attends the local public school, which is within walking distance or not more than a five minute drive for most.

Focusing on actions that affirm the Culture of Life

By naming October as Respect Life Month, we emphasize learning about the many issues that tear down or build up the Culture of Life. In addition, we focus on the actions that positively or negatively affect this culture.

What is the Culture of Life? How do you know if you are tearing down or building up in your home, your school, or your work place? Some very simple measures are to celebrate life in our day to day living.
