God’s timing and the petitions of St. Monica

Word on Fire
Fr. Steve Grunow

St. Monica was likely born in the year A.D. 331 and died in the year A.D. 387 . Her husband was a Roman of minor nobility named Patricius, and with Patricius, Monica had three children, one of whom was named Augustine.

Augustine would become one of the premiere converts to the Catholic faith, and his works of theology and spirituality are among the greatest of the treasures of the Church.

Strive to make all schools welcoming to the disabled

To the editor:

I enjoyed reading your article on “A dozen reasons to choose Catholic schools”.  The list was spot on, except for number 12, “We provide a safe and welcoming environment for all.”

Many Catholic schools are unable to enroll children with disabilities. I find this very disconcerting, as our faith is all about welcoming and helping the least of us.

Labor Day invites us to reflect on the value of work

Labor Day is a public holiday when we honor the American labor movement and contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. It also offers us opportunities to reflect upon our work’s value.

Church is rebuilding in former Iron Curtain countries

MADISON — The Catholic Church in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia is making “remarkable progress” in the countries formerly under the Iron Curtain, said Bishop Donald J. Hying.

The fall of communism occurred over 25 years ago, but the Church in these countries continues to struggle to rebuild after years of oppressive rule.

Bishop Hying visited the countries of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan recently as a member of the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee on Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.

Thoughts for high school grads going to college

Journey with Faith
Deacon Lawrence Oparaji

Hello, dear graduate, Congratulations on achieving such an important milestone! You have reached it because of your faith that God, who started this good work in you, will bring it to fulfillment.

In addition, your hard work, your dedication, and some very vital relationships — family and friends who have supported you and loved you and journeyed with you — have all helped you come to this moment in your life. Please know of my best wishes going forward.

Healed by the relics of saints

Linda Schoenmann

In the spring of 2018, I was pretty sure I had breast cancer based on many signs God gave me while going through medical tests. But I also noticed God surrounded me with breast cancer survivors, so I felt I would be OK. I trusted God had a plan to bring good out of this situation.

I offered up my suffering for the conversion of sinners; for our bishop, priests, seminarians, and vocations; and for Valley of Our Lady Monastery, a community of Cistercian nuns who need a new facility. I turned to these beautiful brides of Christ knowing I could count on their pure prayers, which are amplified by the intercession of Our Lady and over 100 saints whose relics are entrusted to them!

Finding God everywhere and everyday

There is, to be sure, a stress within the biblical tradition that God is radically other: “Truly, you are a God who hides himself, O God of Israel, the Savior.” (Isaiah 45:15) and “No one shall see [God] and live” (Exodus 33:20).

This speaks to the fact that the one who creates the entire universe from nothing cannot be, himself, an item within the universe, one being alongside of others.

Bishop Hying to lead 2019 Respect Life Retreat

BARABOO — “I’ll be focusing on building a culture of life through the beauty of the human person. We often talk about human dignity, but it goes beyond human dignity. It’s the beauty of the human person that needs our focus,” Bishop Donald J. Hying said.

He is preparing to lead the Respect Life Retreat Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 to 7, at Durward’s Glen Retreat Center in rural Baraboo.

Totus Tuus teaches and shares truths

KIELER — The week ended with a water fight.

A week at Totus Tuus typically ends with a water fight, and if you talk to many of the program’s young participants, such as nine-year-old Kara Weber-Droessler, you’d hear, “I really look forward to Fridays because we get to do a giant water fight if we get three 10s.”

The “three 10s” are rewards for good behavior and learning well during the week.

Her friend, nine-year-old Kaylin Crippes, also shared that “I like how we get to do Water Day,” remarking how she’d love to get a bucket of cold water dumped on her as part of the end-of-the-week festivities.

Totus Tuus participants loving the water fight is a truth.

Kids at Totus Tuus also learn other deeper truths, such as the presence of Christ in the Eucharist at Mass, the graces that come from the sacraments, and the importance of prayer as part of daily life.

Program for youth

For the sixth summer in a row, the Diocese of Madison is presenting the summer Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness, and Eucharistic worship.
