Checking on parents during extended holiday visit

Q My husband and I are traveling to his parents’ home for the Christmas holiday. We are not sure what to expect. His parents are both in their mid-80s and we have not seen them for several months as we live on the East Coast.

My husband is an only child so we rely mostly on phone calls with his parents to inform us of their well-being. Each time we speak they assure us they are fine but it seems that our conversations have become less detailed. We have also noticed that they often repeat the same information during our conversations.

‘Arrival’ and understanding God’s speech

Like E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Starman, Independence Day, and a host of similar films over the past 30 years, Arrival explores the theme of an alien visitation to earth.

In this iteration, Louise Banks (played by Amy Adams) is a linguistic expert, who is called upon by the U.S. military to facilitate conversation with visitors from another world, whose space-crafts have landed (actually not quite landed, for they hover a few feet off the ground) at a number of locations around the globe.

Sharing God’s mercy this Christmas with grandparents

Sr. Constance Veit, LSP

In the past few weeks I’ve been asked to speak about loneliness in the elderly on numerous occasions.

I was even quoted in a recent article by Catholic journalist Mary Rezac, entitled “Our Elders Are Lonely — Do We Care?” As we look forward to Christmas, let’s hope we can all say, “Of course we do!”

Support scientists in protecting our planet’s health

To the editor:

Thank you for publishing the December 1 article on Pope Francis’ November speech at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Pope Francis said, “I would say that it falls to scientists, who work free of political, economic or ideological interests . . . ” to build a cultural model to confront the challenge of climate change.

American Catholics must also support our scientists. U.S. bishops could hold a similar science summit. This would be an opportunity to teach Catholics and public leaders and explain the Catholic principle of stewardship of our earth in human solidarity.

Dispelling fear in a season of hope

Fr. Bart Timmerman

One of the hallmarks of the Catholic Church in the United States is ministry to immigrants.

Some of the first saints of our American Church served Catholic immigrants to the United States. Most notably is St. Frances Cabrini, who was the first American citizen who was canonized. She founded hospitals, schools, and institutions for the poor that served immigrants in large cities like New York and Chicago. She is the Patron Saint of Immigrants because of her devotion and care for them.

Welcoming immigrants

So it has always been the Catholic Church through the centuries that has welcomed immigrants to the United States. Still in our day, we as Catholics, have a duty to continue ministering to our brothers and sisters who come to the United States in search of a better life for themselves and their families.

St. Augustine Parish moving forward with new student residence

PLATTEVILLE — With Phase 1 complete, having acquired the necessary land while concurrently working with the City of Platteville to secure all the needed approvals, St. Augustine University Parish is moving forward with Phase 2 — a much-needed student residence.

Student residence

Presently students struggle to find high-quality, centrally located housing near campus. The proposed $10,000,000 student apartments will assist those upperclassmen, while at the same time offer a virtues-based residence where tomorrow’s leaders can be formed in faith and from which they can serve the campus and larger community.

“With fundraising ongoing, we believe it is realistic that we will be able to break ground on the student residence next fall,” said Fr. John Del Priore, SJS, parochial vicar of St. Augustine University Parish.

“This means upperclassmen will be able to take up residence here in the fall of 2018, as we want to do this right for the students.”

The 2017 plan for breaking ground on the residential component of the overall plan (Phase 2) will allow St. Augustine to maintain its rapidly growing ministry serving the students of UW-Platteville.
