The second movement of the kerygma

Hying logo

What a difference a year makes! Who could have imagined last Advent the place we would find ourselves in at this moment?

The COVID pandemic, the presidential election, and the ongoing violence in our cities have completely changed and challenged us in unimaginable ways. The entire human race is hurting. We can see the power of sin and death all around us.

This Advent, I have never felt the need for prayer more profoundly or heard the longings of the Old Testament prophets more keenly.

We seek liberation. We desire a savior. We need Jesus Christ and all that He has to give us.

Bilingual fundraiser to support pandemic services at the Catholic Multicultural Center

MADISON — The Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) is still making a difference, one person at a time!

Throughout the pandemic, the CMC has continued to offer crucial services to help people meet their basic needs: food pantry with personal hygiene items, food pantry delivery, employment search assistance, low-cost immigration legal services, and Dane County’s only free community meal served every day of the week.

Though we cannot gather in-person this year, the CMC is continuing the tradition of its annual bilingual (English/Spanish) Radiothon fundraiser and community celebration with La Movida radio.

Understanding the kerygma

In the initial efforts to launch our Go Make Disciples evangelizing initiative, the word, “kerygma” comes up often.

Meaning “proclamation” in the original Greek, the kerygma is the essence of the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ distilled to its shining essence.

In the Acts of the Apostles, Simon Peter stands up on Pentecost morning, addresses the assembled crowd, and proclaims that this Jesus, whom they crucified, God has made both Lord and Savior.

Colorado votes in favor of late-term abortion

One of the most heartbreaking results that has come out of this most recent election comes to us out of Colorado. Some faithful pro-life groups were able to put the question of banning late-term (after 22 weeks in utero) abortion on the ballot, and a majority of voters in Colorado voted in favor of late-term abortion. Let that sink in for a minute.

Do you know what late-term abortion entails? It entails the abortionist injecting the baby’s heart (through the mother’s abdomen) with a chemical that will cause cardiac arrest in the baby. Then, the mother is sent away until her baby is dead. Next, labor is induced. This labor can last for more than one day. The mother will give birth to an intentionally dead baby. There are 100,000 late-term abortions in the United States every year. Let that sink in for another minute. Father, forgive them, they know not what they do!

Make a list, check it twice

kevin-editorial

We love to make lists. Be they shopping lists, Christmas wish lists, bucket lists, or future vacation lists, we are always making lists.

They help to illustrate and organize thoughts and plans in our minds. They also aid us as reminders. We are less likely to forget something if it’s “on the list”.

‘I’ll pray for you’

A lot of people we know are going through challenges. You know what they are; I’ll spare you a hypothetical list.

Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ amid COVID-19; the Diocese of Madison nine months in

Coat of Arms

MADISON — This week marks nine months that we as the local Church have been struggling, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, to continue to proclaim the Gospel and the good news of salvation, only made possible through Our Lord’s crucifixion and resurrection.

While so much of our daily life has been altered, the need for the Church and Our Lord’s graces through the sacraments made available through Her have only become more crucial. Even in a pandemic, we are still called to Go Make Disciples and grow in our holiness.

Specific to keeping the Sunday Mass obligation

As the number of cases, hospitalizations, and sadly, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 continue to increase, Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison reminded us last week in one of his daily videos that those vulnerable or at risk, and those who work or live with those at risk, should “take advantage of the generous dispensations that are written into Canon Law.”

You are likely already dispensed from your Sunday obligation, if you are older, immuno-compromised, live or work with someone who is, or are subject to other COVID-related situations.

Parishes around the diocese to host Men of Christ event

MADISON — The Men of Christ-Madison and the St. Francis Xavier Parish Knights of Columbus Council #3924 are hosting an Advent Men’s Retreat on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 5.

The event has come together after the initial in-person Men of Christ-Madison event had to cancel.

Due to COVID-19, the format has been adjusted to a mixed design.

The speakers’ presentations are being recorded and extended out to participating parish sites.

Each participating parish will host a live event, following the recommended health guidelines for their area.
