Preserving prayer and history in Roxbury

ROXBURY — What started as just another leak in a beautiful old church quickly became a mission of love for the faithful at St. Norbert Parish in Roxbury.

Recognized as the oldest parish in Dane County, with a continuous history dating to 1846, the current church saw its cornerstone laid in 1856.

The effects of time and a patchwork of repairs done over many decades were taking their toll.

Wind had caused the damage that led to the leak, and an inspection revealed the church needed a new roof.

Follow Bishop Hying on social media

MADISON — In late June, Bishop Hying waded back into the Twitterverse, and started tweeting brief personal messages and reflections for the first time since coming to Madison last year.

His messages are clearly designed to inspire and invite us all into closer relationship with Christ, and therefore with one another.

So, here in print, and online, is your invitation to “follow” Bishop Hying on social media (@bishophying on both Twitter and Facebook) and invite your friends, children, and grandchildren to do the same.

Rosary Rally at the State Capitol on August 15

The following information is from www.UniteWisconsin.com

We are all living in perilous times facing EPIDEMICS and THREATS TO OUR FREEDOMS. Our cities are disintegrating into anarchy with RIOTS damaging the property and taking the lives of innocent people. More than ever, we are being called to pray together – to UNITE Wisconsin against all evil.

God said “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Building a monastery of the heart

Hying Logo

Last week, I was blessed to lead the annual retreat for the Cistercian Nuns here in our diocese.

The Valley of Our Lady Monastery in Prairie du Sac has been a sacred place of contemplative prayer, cloistered life, and beautiful peace since it was established in the 1950’s.

This community of Sisters radically dedicated to God through a life of prayer, silence, and work is a blessing for all of us. Being with them was a privilege and a grace.

Four degrees of love

St. Bernard of Clairveaux breathed new life into Cistercian monasticism in the Middle Ages during the 11th century and monasteries began all over Europe in a refreshing movement of spiritual fervor.

‘How is your prayer life?’

kevin-editorial

What is the one thing that we want to do more of, never make enough time for, are capable of doing in countless different ways, always wondering if we’re doing it right, are skeptical of its effectiveness, and the topic thereof is always seeming to pop up in our lives?

If you read the title of this editorial, you know it’s one of those words, and it’s not “how,” “is,” “your,” or life”.

Since you’ve made it to paragraph three, I’ll assume you know I’m talking about prayer, and you’re perfectly fine with this topic.

Whether it be in the confessional, in a conversation with a close friend or spiritual director, in a small group setting, or the occasional “sidewalk discipleship” encounter, talk of our struggles and challenges will come up.

Compassionate services for divorced Catholics and those in irregular marriage situations

MADISON — In an effort to improve diocesan ministry to divorced Catholics and those in irregular marriage situations, the Diocese of Madison Tribunal has expanded its services to include a Pre-Petition Case Advisor.

A Pre-Petition Case Advisor accompanies an individual through the discernment process following a divorce by explaining the Church’s teaching on marriage, making a personal assessment of any moral and canonical remedies available, and providing assistance in petitioning for a declaration of nullity (commonly referred to as an annulment).

The Learning Atrium expands its vision

MADISON — Necessity is the mother of invention, and for one mother, the source of a life-changing mission that is impacting children throughout the Diocese of Madison.

When Deb Krebs noticed her youngest son was not faring well with reading, beginning in kindergarten, she searched for extra help.

Discovering the Barton System, designed to address spelling, reading, and writing struggles for students with dyslexia, was a game changer.

Pray the Liturgy of the Hours

Hying Logo

The Liturgy of the Hours is the official prayer of the Church and serves as an enriching compliment to the daily Mass.

A compilation of psalms, Scripture, prayers, and writings of the saints, the Hours are divided into seven daily prayer times with morning and evening prayer as the pillars.

Priests, deacons, most Religious, and many lay faithful pray it on a daily basis and find its rhythm and cycle to be rich spiritual fruit.

Having prayed it myself for almost 40 years, the psalms and readings have become comforting and holy companions on my path to God.

Finding what we all can agree on

kevin-editorial

I have a problem. Every time I see a potentially controversial Facebook post, tweet, message board posting, online news story, or any other message of the sort, I am immediately drawn to and sucked into the comments section.

For those unfamiliar with the more social media-esque methods of sharing news and information, the comments section allows people who’ve read the article — or just glanced at the headline — to type out and share their thoughts on it for all to see. These comments are often opinionated, emotional, or a reflection of one’s thoughts while reading said article or post.

These comments, even in the online Catholic media, can lead to a lot of back and forth debating — or let’s be honest, arguing — sometimes getting very personal.
