Hope does shine at The Beacon

Most of us have seen people holding signs at intersections saying, “I’m homeless. Please help me!”

We feel sorry for them and want to give them some money. But we get the sinking feeling that the money won’t help them break out of the cycle of homelessness.

However, since The Beacon opened almost a year ago in Madison on October 16, 2017, I feel more optimistic about homeless people. And I wonder if I should carry a card with me to give those people begging for money information on The Beacon.

Apostolate puts the disabled front and center

One of my favorite things to cover for the Catholic Herald over the years have been Masses and events sponsored by the Apostolate for Persons with Disabilities (formerly the Apostolate to the Handicapped).

How to prevent tragedies from happening

Many parents and grandparents like myself are afraid of shootings happening in their children’s and grandchildren’s schools.

In fact, a recent study from Ball State University of parents’ expectations found that about 36 percent of respondents believed that their local high school was highly likely to have a gun incident in the next three years.

Why the Encuentro is important

On this page we are publishing the Spanish version of an article on the Regional Encuentro held at the University of Notre Dame recently.

We previously published the article in English in our print edition and in English (http://www.madisoncatholicherald.org/news/around-diocese/7688-encuetro.html) and Spanish (http://www.madisoncatholicherald.org/espanol/7690-encuentro.html) on our website.

We are publishing it in Spanish prior to the National V Encuentro which begins September 20 in Grapevine, Texas. Three delegates from the Diocese of Madison will be attending the National Encuentro.

Catholic Church comes to the rescue

As it happens so many times in places throughout the world, the Catholic Church has come to the rescue of more than one million people taking shelter in relief camps after floods ravaged Kerala state in southwest India.

The Indian effort is the biggest rescue and relief operation the Catholic Church in Kerala has ever undertaken, reported Catholic News Service. All 32 Catholic dioceses in Kerala have joined in the relief work.

What we learned from the John Jay study

In 2004, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York published an exhaustive study called The Nature and Scope of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests and Deacons in the United States 1950-2002. …

For those concerned about recent news about sexual abuse by members of the clergy and hierarchy, this report is worth reading.

Take bishop’s words to heart

One of the first things Bishop Robert C. Morlino did after becoming Bishop of Madison was to promulgate a Policy Regarding Abuse of Minors, Sexual Misconduct, and Sexual Harassment on November 6, 2003. It was revised in 2016, and copies of this policy are available on the diocesan website (www.madisondiocese.org).

Bishop Morlino has been vigilant in following the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People issued in 2002. In that document, the bishops reaffirmed the obligation of all involved with the Church to “protect young people and to prevent sexual abuse” since this “flows from the mission and example given to us by Jesus Christ himself.”

Support our Catholic schools

When my 91-year-old mother-in-law Ruth died last year, she suggested that people give memorials to Aquinas High School in La Crosse, her alma mater. She believed she had an excellent education at Aquinas, and she wanted to ensure that it remained around to educate future generations.

That is one way we can support our Catholic schools. Many of us experienced top-notch educations at our Catholic elementary and high schools as I did. We continue to support these schools with our time, talent, and treasure. Many of us are also parents of students who attended Catholic schools, and we support those schools, too.

Bishop Morlino has provided strong, compassionate leadership in diocese

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

When Bishop Robert C. Morlino came to the Diocese of Madison as our fourth bishop in 2003, I had the opportunity to spend some time with him both in Madison and in Helena, Mont., his previous diocese.

Many people asked me then, “What do you think of our new bishop?” My first impressions of Bishop Morlino have continued throughout the past 15 years.

First impressions continue

My first impression was that I could see Bishop Morlino’s faith in Jesus Christ shining forth in both his words and actions.
