Catholic Schools Week: Dividends for Life

Each year, in late January we set aside a week to focus attention on, and to celebrate, our Catholic schools. This year Catholic Schools Week runs from Sunday, January 31, to Saturday, February 6, with the theme, “Dividends for Life: Faith, Knowledge, Discipline, Morals.”

Health care reform

There is no question that our country is in need of health care reform. The bishops of the United States stand together and for years have been clear in encouraging the passage of a truly universal health policy — one which maintains a respect for human life and dignity, which provides access for all with a special concern for the poor and inclusion of immigrants, and one which pursues the common good and preserves pluralism, including freedom of conscience and variety of options.

Bless Our Priests Collection

Dear friends in Christ,

This year the entire Church celebrates a special Year for Priests, as proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI. The Holy Father reminds us that the gift of the ordained priesthood flows directly from Christ’s heart. Theirs is a vocation of humble-selfless love, imitating Christ Himself. They are consecrated to serve you, the faithful, with complete fidelity to Christ and His mission, in constant union with Him, inviting you to have a “heart to heart” encounter with Jesus. Each day our priests strive for holiness and each day they pray for you.

Share Your Faith Campaign

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

On the weekend of November 21st and 22nd we will be faced with an unique opportunity to assist, once again, some very specific brothers and sisters in need, by way of the national “Share your Faith Campaign” (also known generally as the CCHD Collection). With this year’s portion of the funds collected for national impact we, as a diocese, will be reaching out to the elderly and sick of our society, particularly those served by the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Catholic Relief Services Collection

bishop's letter logoDear Friends in Christ,

The theme of Jesus in disguise reminds us that Christ is present in those who suffer — and in those who respond compassionately to their needs. The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports important Catholic organizations that carry out God’s work around the world — providing refugee resettlement, HIV/AIDS and international poverty relief, legal aid for poor immigrants, emergency and disaster relief, and advocacy for the promotion of global peace and justice. Remembering these humanitarian obligations is part of our role as Catholics, being leaven in the world.

Service: A hallmark of our faith and our schools

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Each year we set aside a week in late January to focus attention on and celebrate our Catholic schools. This year Catholic Schools Week runs from Sunday, Jan. 25, to Saturday, Jan. 31, with the theme, “Celebrate Service.”

Bishop Morlino’s letter to priests

6 January 2009

Dear Brother Priests,

I pray that this letter finds you well and enjoying a blessed Christmas Season. During this time of year, when we celebrate the light of Christ coming into the world, it is necessary to consider an area of darkness in our country — the continued practice of aborting our unborn brothers and sisters.
