Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run

In 1960, Squires of the Knights of Columbus in Mexico, the United States, and Canada came up with the idea of honoring Mary with a rose. Mary used the rose as a sign of her appearance at Guadalupe.

They started at London in Ontario, Canada, and ended at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico, presenting Mary with a live rose.

The following year, both a bronze rose and a silver rose were used. The decision was made to use a silver rose in the future. The silver rose is crafted from a real rose.

Farewell planned for Beloit Sister

BELOIT — A farewell reception for Sr. Hedwig Clavijo will take place on Saturday, May 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Jude Parish Hall. St. Jude Marian Guild President Sandy Sarnow said the parish group is sponsoring the farewell.

Sister Hedwig, soon to be 82 years old, has been a member of the Auxiliaries of the Blessed Sacrament for more than 50 years. Presently, she serves at the Beloit convent. She is returning to the motherhouse at Chia which is near Bogata, in her native Colombia, South America.

Madison Catholic Woman’s Club rejoices in 100 years

“This is the day the Lord has made. Let us be glad and rejoice in it!”

Barbara Kutchmarek quoted this passage from Psalm 188 as she greeted those attending the Madison Catholic Woman’s Club’s 100-Year Anniversary Celebration held May 6 at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center.

Memorial Day Masses in the diocese

A Memorial Day Mass will be held at Resurrection Cemetery Chapel, Madison, on Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. Bishop Robert C. Morlino will be the principal celebrant and homilist. Area priests will serve as concelebrants. Knights of Columbus will serve as honor guard. The Mass will be held outdoors, but in case of rain, Mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 405 S. Owen Dr. Refreshments will follow Mass.

St. Paul University Catholic Center holds annual Spring Wine Fest

MADISON — A light spring rain could not dampen the spirits of hundreds who flocked to the Madison Concourse Hotel recently to celebrate what has become the premiere event of the spring season: the St. Paul Spring Wine Fest.

University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison students welcomed guests at the door with smiles and tasting cards for recording impressions of a wide variety of wines and local brews.

All Saints Parish celebrates completion of building project phase II

BERLIN — All Saints Parish celebrated completion of their phase II building project, which included a new parish hall with a spacious, well-equipped kitchen and an administrative wing.

During the weekend of April 26 and 27, Pastor Fr. Jerome Maksvytis blessed the new additions and joined his parishioners in exploring the new spaces.

Multiple-purpose use

The parish hall is designed to be utilized for multiple purposes, including basketball hoops that are attractively hidden overhead with retracting doors. The floor is a sports carpet with the basketball court outlined in the design of the carpet.

The Madison Diocesan Choir directed by Dr. Patrick Gorman — joined by a chamber orchestra and four guest soloists — presented what Bishop Robert C. Morlino called a “spectacularly beautiful” concert of choral masterworks at its spring concert on Friday, May 9.

‘Living Well’ workshops help older adults with chronic diseases

JANESVILLE — The Rock County Council on Aging will offer a “Living Well” workshop series each Thursday at 1:30 p.m., starting May 22 and running through June 26 at the Rock County Council on Aging office, 3328 Hwy. 51 N.

“Living Well” is a six-week program for people with chronic diseases and their caregivers.
