Bishop Morlino celebrates Pontifical Mass at the Throne

MADISON — On Monday, March 20, at the chapel of Holy Name Heights (Bishop O’Connor Center), His Excellency Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison, celebrated a Pontifical Mass at the Throne for the transferred Feast of St. Joseph.

The Mass was in the Roman Rite’s older, traditional form, sometimes called the “Extraordinary Form.” The music was in Latin, in Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony, with two hymns in English for the entrance and the recessional.

From grief and disability emerge hope and meaning

Second  in a series on the recent conference on “Dignity at the End of Life, from Suffering to Hope,” held in Fitchburg.

Did God vanish?

Imagine this: You are a healthy, 30-year-old husband, father, and accomplished musician — active, repeatedly successful, and comfortably employed.

Suddenly, you wake up one day to find you are numb to all sensation below your waist. More symptoms follow, resulting in weeks of tests and still more tests.

Diocese to coordinate efforts to evangelize Hispanic population

MADISON — Recently a group of priests involved in Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Madison met to begin to plan for a diocesan-wide effort to welcome and minister to Hispanic Catholics living in the diocese.

The priests are hoping to involve Hispanic parishioners following a grass-roots, consultative format that has been initiated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called Encuentro. Encuentro is a national effort on behalf of the Catholic Church in the United States to respond to the needs of Hispanic Catholics and to strengthen the ways in which Hispanics respond to the call to the New Evangelization as missionary disciples serving the entire Church.

STOUGHTON — A group of St. Ann School sixth graders is putting their empathy into action for people in a village more than 7,000 miles away.

Inspired by the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park that they read and discussed in their language arts class, the students put together a Lenten project to help build a well in South Sudan.

A Long Walk to Water is about Salva Dut, a boy from a village in South Sudan, Africa, who fled his village as war erupted outside of his school. He ran with many other children to escape the violence. They ran not knowing if they’d ever find their families again.

Dut ended up walking more than 1,000 miles to safety, first to a refugee camp in Ethiopia, and eventually to Kenya. He spent 11 years in refugee camps until being sent to New York City to start a new life.

The book talks about Dut’s journey and about the plight of the people who often do not have access to good, clean water. Dut, after working and saving money, decided to go back to help his fellow Sudanese people by drilling wells.

Conference held on Dignity at the End of Life

First in a series on the recent conference on “Dignity at the End of Life, from Suffering to Hope,” held in Fitchburg.

FITCHBURG — There’s no escaping it — we are all going to die.

Although it may result from a sudden event, census trends predict that most of us will experience the end of life after an extensive period of “old age”. This period often brings us new challenges in the form of physical or cognitive disabilities.

Eucharistic Day at Sacred Hearts Parish, Sun Prairie

SUN PRAIRIE — St. Teresa of Avila once heard someone say, “If only I had lived at the time of Jesus . . . If only I had seen Jesus . . . If only I had talked with Jesus . . .”

St. Teresa replied, “But do we not have in the Eucharist the living, true, and real Jesus present before us? Why look for more?”

Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish, 221 Columbus St., will hold its annual Eucharistic Day, Sunday, March 26.
