Bishop ordains new deacon for service

MADISON — Bishop Robert C. Morlino ordained David Gabriel Johannes to the Order of Deacons during a Mass on Friday, May 27, in the chapel of the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center in Madison.

In welcoming those filling the chapel, Bishop Morlino said, “We give thanks as we receive the gift of David as a deacon from the Lord himself. We are grateful to David and his wonderful family. We are grateful to the priests and deacons visiting from Denver, including Msgr. Michael Glenn, rector of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary (which Johannes attends). We’re all family.”

Bishop Morlino also welcomed his brother deacons and priests from the Diocese of Madison, who made the “sacrifice and effort” to attend the ordination in this busy season of weddings .

At the beginning of the ordination rite, Monsignor Glenn testified that Johannes “has been found worthy.” Bishop Morlino then said, “Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose this man, our brother, for the Order of the diaconate.” People in the chapel offered their enthusiastic applause.

Garden is dedicated in Pine Bluff for the unborn dead

PINE BLUFF — An estimated 300 people gathered May 24, on the Feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians, as Bishop Robert C. Morlino dedicated the new Miracle of Life Rosary Garden here.

“It was one of those moments when, gathered around our bishop we love so much, we truly felt like a Catholic family,” said Fr. Richard Heilman, pastor of St. Mary Parish, Pine Bluff. “Our Catholic beauty and identity were celebrated, beginning with a procession of some 20 altar servers, the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard, and about 50 Knights of Divine Mercy. The music was incredible as the Schola Cantorum of the Knights of Divine Mercy sang classic Latin pieces.

“And the dedication concluded with the youth releasing of a giant helium-balloon Rosary.,” he said. “Afterward, we all celebrated with a family-style potluck cookout. I knew an evening like this would leave indelible ‘Catholic’ mark, especially on the hearts of the youth gathered with us.”

The garden, presided over by Mary, Help of Christians, who stands on a flower-covered mound in the shape of her Immaculate Heart, honors children lost before birth. It is located, quite literally, beside the restful waters and verdant pastures of beautiful Pine Bluff, Wis. The sacred place was created to be a destination for solitude, prayer, and healing.

David Johannes to be ordained to diaconate

David JohannesMADISON — David Johannes will be ordained to the transitional diaconate by Bishop Robert C. Morlino on Friday, May 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center in Madison.

Johannes has attended St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver, Colo., for the past six years.

His home parish is the Cathedral Parish in Madison. Johannes graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was active in the Knights of Columbus at St. Paul’s University Catholic Center. He served as grand knight of the UW council, which won the Most Outstanding College Council Award at the national level for two years.

Through the Knights of Columbus, Johannes became involved as a volunteer with the Apostolate to the Handicapped of the Diocese of Madison. He became a server and commentator on the weekly television Masses sponsored by the apostolate on Channel 3.
