Sister Kathleen “Kaye” Ashe, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sister Kathleen “Kaye” Ashe, OP, died Feb. 15, 2014, at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, La Grange, Ill. Her religious name was Sister Keverne. The funeral Mass will be held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m., followed by burial of the cremains in the Motherhouse Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at the Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, Wis., where a wake and remembering service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. in Rosary Chapel, Dominican University, River Forest, Ill.

Sister Kaye made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1950, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1953. She taught elementary school for seven years, ministered in various higher education positions for 28 years, served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation as prioress for eight years and in development for four years, worked in copy editing for three years, and ministered as a spiritual director for four years.

She has lectured widely and is the author of Today’s Woman, Tomorrow’s Church plus many individual chapters in other books, articles, and book reviews. Sister Kaye served in Maryland, Wisconsin, Illinois, and California as well as Fribourg, Switzerland; London, England; and Florence, Italy.

Sister Mary Elizabeth dies

PRAIRIE DU SAC — Sister Mary Elizabeth (nee Susan Mabel Guyette), died at the age of 74, at Franciscan Mayo Hospital in LaCrosse on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. She was born in Fond du Lac on September 12, 1939, the daughter of the late Herbert Leo and Gertrude Nell (Colburn) Guyette. She entered Valley of Our Lady Monastery, where she made her solemn profession on June 13, 1998. She was greatly loved by her religious sisters, who were with her praying at her side, when she quietly went home to God.

Sister Jo Wear, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sister Jo Wear, OP, died Jan. 14, 2014, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sister Flavian. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Jan. 17, 2014, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Jo made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Jan. 26, 1937, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1940. She taught for 14 years and served as principal for 15 years, coordinator of student sisters for three years, guidance counselor for four years, social worker for 17 years and pastoral caregiver for 11 years. Sister Jo served in Illinois; Washington, D.C.; Alabama; Wisconsin; Minnesota; California; and Florida.

Sister Madelyn Kortendick, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sister Madelyn Kortendick, OP, died Dec. 24, 2013, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sister Sulpice. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Dec. 30, 2013, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Madelyn made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1937, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1940. She taught for 30 years and served as principal for 13 years, pastoral minister for two years, and as support staff for 13 years. Sister Madelyn was one of the first four missionaries from the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation sent to Holy Cross Parish, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where she opened the school, taught English to people of all ages, gave catechetical instruction, and served as pastoral minister. She served in Illinois, New York, and Wisconsin, as well as Bolivia.

Sister Francis Celia Schulte, SSSF, dies

MILWAUKEE — School Sister of St. Francis Celia Schulte, who lived her religious vocation in education and administration for more than 50 years, died December 9, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sister was 84 years old.

The daughter of Henry and Anna Schulte, she was born June 13, 1929, in Jefferson City, Missouri. She was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis June 13, 1947; made her first profession of vows June 21, 1949; and final (perpetual) vows June 21, 1955.

Sister Patrice McGovern, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sister Patrice McGovern, OP, died Nov. 11, 2013. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Nov. 14, 2013, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Patrice made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1946, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1949. She ministered in education as a teacher for 15 years, principal for 21 years, assistant principal for two years, and volunteer tutor and substitute teacher for one year. Sister Patrice served in pastoral ministry for 22 years. She served in Illinois, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Iowa, California, Oklahoma, New York and Nebraska.

Sister Clarus Jonaitis, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sister Clarus Jonaitis, OP, died Oct. 19, 2013, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Oct. 23, 2013, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Clarus made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 6, 1940, and her final profession Aug. 6, 1943. She taught for 49 years, including 16 as an art teacher. Sister Clarus served in Illinois, Maryland, New York, Wisconsin, California and Nebraska.

Sister Ruth Roland, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sister Ruth Roland, OP, died Oct. 12, 2013, at the Sinsinawa Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa. Her religious name was Sister Estevan. Natural burial took place Oct. 14, 2013, in the Motherhouse Cemetery. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Oct. 18, 2013.

Sister Ruth made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 7, 1941, and her final profession Aug. 7, 1944. She taught for 22 years and served as principal for six years and school business officer for two years. Sister Ruth cared for the needs of the elderly for 37 years. She served in Wisconsin, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Washington.

Sr. Rita Clara Blau, a Franciscan Sister of Mary for 59 years and a licensed practical nurse, died Sunday morning, September 29, 2013, at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Mo. She was 82.

Sister Dorothy Hughes, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sister Dorothy Hughes, OP (Marie Matthew), died Sept. 25, 2013, at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Sept. 30, 2013, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Dorothy made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1948, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1951. She taught home economics for seven years, served as a dietitian for 15 years, and ministered in adult education for 43 years. Sister Dorothy served in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.
