Babies in wombs still not free, says Dr. Alveda King

To the editor:

Recently, I ran across an article written by Dr. Alveda King, niece of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and daughter of civil rights activist Rev. A. D. King.

Dr. King began by taking note that in January, the U.S. celebrated 150 years since signing the Emancipation Proclamation — the end of slavery of black people in America. She then stated: “Still the babies are not free.” She noted that our country also marked 40 years of the March for Life held annually in Washington, D.C., “because babies still are not free.”

Blessed John Paul II was model witness to Christ

To the editor:

I am thrilled that Pope John Paul II, a man of deep faith, will soon be proclaimed a saint by the Catholic Church! The Holy Father was an inspiration and a model witness to the life of Christ; a shepherd of truth immersed in profound humility and immense love for both God and man.

His many writings and tireless, worldwide pilgrimages of faith have been a source of strength, encouragement, confidence, optimism, and enlightenment not only to Catholics but to all men of good will.

Concerned about detailed content included in paper

To the editor:

We love receiving your paper for many reasons; one of them is because we can leave it in the reading area and read throughout the week.

It is edifying and enlightening; we are happy that our son — who can now read — enjoys paging through it. I was surprised that Fr. Tad Pacholczyk’s article on perversions went into such detail. While I completely agree with his views on the subject, I do not feel the editorial should have been included or if it was, it should have had some kind of editorial note on content that could be found in the online edition.

Justice prevails in Gosnell verdict, but what about babies killed in womb?

To the editor:

Kermit Gosnell is guilty, and justice has been done. According to one courtroom observer, Gosnell seemed surprised that he was found guilty, and it is that aspect of his cold attitude that describes the monster he is.

If sane and moral people had tried to conjure up the most monstrous abortionist alive, they would have been hard put to come up with the atrocities committed by Gosnell. Our fear that he would be acquitted is unrealized, and America is once again a nation with a conscience which recognizes a grave injustice.

God forgives servers and others who make mistakes

To the editor:

I was reading the guest column by Frank Zawlocki (April 25 issue, Catholic Herald) and it brought back memories of my serving days. I loved serving and we actually had to memorize Latin responses back then.

My mother was a little embarrassed one time on Sunday when the sermon was over and she saw me sitting asleep. Thirty seconds later, I heard the people responding to the priest and I rose very quickly.

Concerned about powers of the U.S. Supreme Court

To the editor:

Thomas Jefferson had some very grave concerns about the powers of the United States Supreme Court. In a letter he wrote in 1820 he voiced his concerns: “You seem to consider the judges the ultimate arbiters of all constitutional questions; a very dangerous doctrine indeed, and one which would place us under the despotism of an oligarchy. Our judges . . . and their power [are] the more dangerous as they are in office for life, and are not responsible, as the other functionaries are, to the elective control.”

In 1962 the Supreme Court removed state-sponsored prayer from public schools (Engel v. Vitale). In 1965 it tossed a law preventing married couples from buying contraceptives by creating a “right to privacy” (Griswold v. Connecticut).

We don’t need more laws, but tougher enforcement of gun laws we now have

To the editor:

I had to respond to Mary Uhler’s editorial on curbing gun violence (April 18 issue of Catholic Herald). She compares motor vehicle deaths to firearm deaths and draws the conclusion that both should be regulated the same.

I formed my own opinion by looking at facts, something the media has failed to do lately. She states that the death rate from motor vehicles per 100,000 is similar to the rate of firearms deaths, and then goes on to quote the opinion of a bishop from Stockton, Calif.

Suggests a discussion group about Pope Francis

To the editor:

I have been researching online for information on Pope Francis. There any many good things to learn about him.

May we please convene a monthly discussion group in the Diocese of Madison in which we can learn about Pope Francis together?

Holy Wisdom Monastery is not in communion with the Catholic Church

To the editor:

Local Catholics need to know that the former Saint Benedict Center, now renamed Holy Wisdom Monastery (HWM), makes no proper distinction between Holy Mass with the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, and a protestant service. It’s not at all in keeping with a Catholic understanding of authentic ecumenism.

The Sisters, who left their vows in 2006, now lead something like a pseudo-parish, not in communion with the Catholic Church, and host various activist dissent groups and so-called “womenpriests.”

People in Wisconsin should have to pay back taxes

To the editor:

In his recent 1,093-page budget, Governor Scott Walker has a provision that says certain taxpayers who have NOT paid their taxes for years — if the state knew of their underpayment but took no action — do NOT have to pay back these taxes.

In other words, the 61 new Department of Revenue employees who might discover these cheaters can take no action.
