Pray for underground bishops in China

To the editor:

In the September 27 edition of the Catholic Herald, you printed an article entitled, “Vatican signs agreement with China on naming bishops.” However, the article failed to mention some relevant information.

Beijing will acknowledge the pope as head of the Catholic Church in China, yet they will have the final say in the appointment of bishops. The Vatican has agreed to recognize, and consecrate, seven illegitimate “bishops” (previously rejected by the Holy See), installed by the communist-controlled Catholic Patriotic Church. The Vatican has requested that two bishops from the persecuted underground church step down in order to make room instead for the “bishops” from the Patriotic Church.

Use of death penalty does not follow Christ’s teaching

To the editor:

After reading the Inside Cover piece in the September 6 issue titled “The Church’s teaching on the death penalty,” I recalled from long ago the quote “you can use Bible quotes to justify anything, including murder,” which, it seems to me, Mr. John Joy does.

In my almost 20 years of Franciscan and Dominican education, I never heard that the Church endorsed the death penalty.

We should treat immigrants with dignity and respect

To the editor:

I have seen a poster several different occasions over the years that says “I am a stranger and you welcomed me [signed] Jesus”, where the word stranger is crossed out and replaced by the word “immigrant.” As a Catholic, I strongly believe that this is what my faith calls me to do: welcome the stranger, help those in need, and treat all with dignity and respect.

Thus, I am heartbroken to see how our nation has been treating immigrants, more so with the recent ICE arrests here in Wisconsin and the Madison area. According to ICE, only half of those arrested in Wisconsin had a previous criminal conviction. The other half, we are criminalizing simply for being here from another country. This is not acceptable, Christian treatment of our fellow human beings.

Thank you to all the good priests who are our unsung heroes

To the editor:

The sex scandal within the Catholic Church has made it even harder for those good priests who have given their lives for serving God.

The one, true, Catholic Church, if understood by all, should not lose members, but gain new converts each day. It is not only the sex scandal but the lack of solid teaching that has put us in this situation.

What we need in Church is transparency and total accountability

To the editor:

I have read Bishop Morlino’s letter regarding the continuing sex abuse scandal in the Church.

He asks  us to pray and fast, to make reparation for the sins of the priests and bishops who sexually abused children and adults, and for those in the hierarchy who covered up those sins.

Expressing appreciation for All Saints Neighborhood dedicated staff, volunteers

To the editor:

September 9 to 15 is National Assisted Living Week. This annual observance was established by The National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) as a way to celebrate those who choose this type of living option and the caring, dedicated staff members who serve them; and to educate the general public about the importance and benefits of this type of long term care. This year’s theme is “Capture the Moment.”

Dealing with scandal within the Church

To the editor:

As we hear about and discuss the serious and continuing sex scandal within the Catholic Church, let’s start by placing the blame where it belongs — squarely on the failed leadership of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The failure has been caused by a lack of true leadership skills and being controlled by vanity and arrogance.

Robert K. Greenleaf was an advocate for Servant Leadership, and in the worldwide history of mankind, the greatest example of a servant leader was Jesus Christ. Jesus was critical of the Pharisees stating in Matthew 23: 2-3, 5, “The scribes and the Pharisees have succeeded Moses as teachers; therefore, do everything and observe everything they tell you. But do not follow their example . . . All their works are performed to be seen.”
