Campaign spending: Imagine what else we could do with $4 billion

Editorial logo

The 2010 elections are over and most of us are breathing a sigh of relief. Even if we didn’t like the outcome of some races, we are probably happy to see the end of bitter campaigning, annoying phone calls, and repetitive radio and television ads.

What really upset me were reports on campaign spending in the 2010 elections. The Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) reported that more than $4 billion, or the annual GDP of Mongolia, was spent on this election.

Tony Magliano confuses some Church teaching with progressive opinions

To the editor:

Tony Magliano has a habit of confusing Church teaching with his progressive opinions. His most recent November 4 column begins post election recalling the “quite difficult” decision in voting for the “most ethical candidates.” It was not difficult; most were clearly either pro-life or pro-choice, the first qualifying factor according to our pope and bishops.

President, university have poor records on abortion

To the editor:

The swooning over the president’s recent visit to UW-Madison is dying down, but the sinister similarity between the man and the institution is very much alive.

Obama has an abysmal voting record on abortion issues; as an Illinois senator he voted down medical help for babies who survived abortion, allowing them to slowly suffocate.

Jesus is with us in the Catholic Church

To the editor:

The author of the “Word to Life” column (Catholic Herald, October 28, 2010 issue) about the young man wishing to speak face to face with the pope missed a terrific opportunity to share with him the good news of the teaching magisterium of the Catholic Church.

To say that “Jesus is infinitely available unlike the pope” is to miss the truth that Jesus stated, “I am always with you” . . . IN his Church.

Rescue of miners in Chile: Did God and his mother have a hand in it?

Editorial logo

A woman I know in the Diocese of Madison e-mailed me a message after the rescue of the miners in Chile. She felt there were many religious aspects to this situation that couldn’t be ignored.

She pointed out these facts:

• Accident occurred:  August 5 (feast of Our Lady of the Snows)

• Found they were alive: August 22 (feast of Queenship of Mary)

• Last miner rescued: October 13 (feast of Our Lady of Fatima)

Apply faith to voting

To the editor:

It is necessary that we vote according to our properly formed consciences as Catholic Christians. We have to stand up for what we believe and cannot check our Catholic faith outside the voting booth.

The right to life of every human person from conception to natural death is the primary and thus the most essential of all human rights. We should remember that the poorest of the poor is the human person in the womb that is menaced with abortion.

Life begins at conception

To the editor:

The period of time during the 40 Days for Life, September 22 through October 31, is an ideal time for all Catholics to be reminded that human life begins at the moment of conception.

At the moment of conception God infuses a newly created immortal soul into the cell union. At that moment there is a body and soul. At the moment there is a new person, a human being.

Candidate takes wrong stand

To the editor:

It is shocking and scandalous. Tom Barrett, candidate for governor of Wisconsin, said at an October 15 town hall meeting in Milwaukee that embryonic stem cell research is “the Lord’s work.”

What a breathtaking new description of life-destroying research! We all know God as the Creator of life, and now Barrett has made Him a willing accomplice in research that depends on destroying a living human embryo.

Protest high interest rates

To the editor:

Catholic Charities recently and correctly cited the horrendous poverty in American and that action needs be taken.

The Catholic Church must speak out against the American and international banks and credit card companies that are allowed to charge unreasonable interest. In the Church of the Middle Ages this was a heinous sin, called usury, that demanded punishment in hell and probably still does.

Now and at the hour of our death

Editorial logo

Our Catholic faith teaches us to respect all human life, from womb to the tomb. In our society today, it seems as if we focus more on the beginning of life than on the end of it.

Many people do not like to talk about death, but it is something we all will face. Some of us will face it sooner than others, but it is inevitable.
