Newsprint tariffs must be stopped

The Catholic Herald was notified by our printer that there will be an increase in our charges starting in August. The main reason given for this increase was the rise in newsprint prices.

Why is this happening? Our government, at the request of a single paper producer, has assessed tariffs (which are really new taxes) on newsprint imported from Canada.

Refugee policy violates U.S. and international law

To the editor:

What Mr. Trump and Mr. Sessions are doing is in violation of international law, and our law, protecting asylum seekers and refugees. It is also a violation of the eighth and 14th Amendments to our Constitution. The inhumane policy of separating young children from their parents will result in irreparable psychological harm.

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) was denied access to the immigration center where children are being held. He did tour a processing center where children were being held in cages with nets over them to prevent escape.

Unjust, inhumane laws should be changed

To the editor:

Recently, I’ve been listening to U.S. government officials coolly defend the government’s new policy of separating children from their parents at the border with a singular rationale: “It’s sad, but we have no choice — their parents broke the law.”

To me it sounds an awful lot like the defense that some would give for abortion. “It’s sad, but what can we do? Abortion is the law of the land.”

Let’s treat immigrants with compassion, respect

Norma, who came to the United States with her family in 2011, talked with KSAT 12 News, an ABC affiliate in San Antonio, Texas, on June 24 about why she immigrated to the United States.

She hoped that by telling her story, more people will understand why some risk everything for life in the United States.

Speak up on abortion funding

Should Title X federal funds be provided to family planning programs that provide or support abortions?

If you agree that abortion should not be considered health care and shouldn’t receive Title X funding, now is the time to express your opinion.

Thank God for crying babies!

Babies crying in church can irritate me, but as I’ve thought about them, I agree with a sign I saw that said, “Thank God for crying babies!”

Why do I think that? Don’t crying babies distract their parents and the entire congregation from prayerfully participating in the Mass?

Yes, they do. But babies should also be loved by their families and welcomed into the entire parish community.

Catholic schools do a great job!

It’s that time of year when we celebrate graduations in schools around the country. This week’s Catholic Herald includes our annual Catholic school graduation section. We invite Catholic schools in the Diocese of Madison to send information about their graduation ceremonies.

Following in St. Isidore’s footsteps

When I was growing up, I spent many weeks during the summer on my grandmother’s farm. I have good memories of those days spent outside in the fresh air, experiencing farm life.

My father, who was a teacher, helped out on the farm during the summer. I was able to help in small ways, too, such as gathering eggs in the hen house and pulling weeks in the garden.

Let’s restore courtesy and civility

Last year, I wrote an “Editor’s View” entitled “Where have courtesy and civility gone?”

I lamented the fact that lack of courtesy seems to be escalating in our country. I mentioned the fact that people rarely opened doors for my mother-in-law who used a walker.

This still seems to happen. There are a few nice people who will hold doors for persons with canes, walkers, or wheelchairs. But many people just ignore these disabled and elderly persons and only pay attention to themselves.

A woman with compassion and courage

Sometimes we learn more about a person after he or she dies. That is the case for me of former First Lady Barbara Bush.

Although I knew about her as the wife of President George H.W. Bush and mother of President George W. Bush, I must admit that I didn’t know as much about her until after she died on April 17.

I learned that she took on a number of causes starting with her husband’s inauguration in 1989. These included homelessness, teenage pregnancy, children’s education, and AIDS.
