Blessed Sacrament students raise money ‘marching’ for hunger

MADISON — “Show an Attitude of Gratitude.”

That is the theme this school year at Blessed Sacrament School in Madison.

That is the reason more than 60 first, second, and third graders laced up their running shoes and ran or walked around the school block as many times as they could.

The occasion was the annual Hunger March held recently.

Helping at home and around the world

For almost 40 years, the march has been an opportunity for students to make the Catholic values they learn part of their everyday lives.

In recent years, the Hunger March has helped many people both locally and globally.

Proceeds from the march have gone to building a well in Africa, helping a family secure the first month’s rent of an apartment, helping Our Lady of Hope Clinic in Madison — a non-profit medical group that provides primary care services to the uninsured, as well as donating to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Prior to the march, the students asked parents, family members, friends, and neighbors to pledge money per lap they completed.

The march begins

As the 9 a.m. start time rolled around and the inspirational music played, the students finished their stretches and warm-ups and got ready for lap number one.

The students walked as a group for the first lap.

As they completed that lap, the students busted through a Hunger March banner and then some took off running as if they’d been waiting all day to do so.

Teens join together to serve others

MADISON — “This is a place where you’ll make a difference.”

Those are bold words coming from Edgewood High School junior DC Morris, but they are true.

Morris, along with 21 other teens, makes up the St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Youth Service Council.

Nearly two years ago, the society’s District Council of Madison formed the council consisting of high school students who serve as representatives for their home parishes or schools.

Luke Voegeli from Sun Prairie is only luge athlete in training from Wisconsin

SUN PRAIRIE — When Luke Voegeli watched the 2014 Winter Olympics, he developed an interest in the luge competition.

It might have been because luge, which takes its name from the French word for sled, is one of the fastest Olympic sports, with riders exceeding 90 miles per hour.

“I had always liked the sport. But it was in 2014 when something sparked for me,” said Luke, 14, in an interview.

A lifelong resident of Sun Prairie, Luke is the son of Jane and Nick Voegeli, members of Sacred Hearts Parish in Sun Prairie. Luke, a high school freshman, is homeschooled by his parents.

Midwest Call to Chivalry camp held at Durward’s Glen

BARABOO — The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) is an organization of lay Catholic Americans concerned about the moral crisis shaking the remnants of Christian civilization.

Its origins date back to January 1971, when the first TFP members started to group around the publication Crusade for a Christian Civilization.

Today, with over 120,000 active members, volunteers, and donors, the TFP is on the front lines of the “Culture War,” peacefully defending the values of tradition, family, and private ownership.

Jefferson students experience Passover Seder meal

JEFFERSON — Classes at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Jefferson often participate in “buddy” activities with one another.

One such example happened on Thursday, March 26, one week before Holy Thursday.

This day commemorates the Last Supper that Jesus shared with His disciples before His crucifixion the next day. Since Jesus and His followers were Jewish, this last meal they shared was the Passover Seder.

MADISON — “You are the Gospel today.”

Those were the words of Msgr. Ken Fiedler during his homily at a Mass attended by dozens of volunteers, some of whom had put in an eight-hour day.
