Students take second place in national coding competition

SAUK CITY — Not all that long ago, one may have heard the words “computer programming” and had an idea what it meant.

One would picture someone typing letters, numbers, and symbols onto a computer and creating a program or application.

These days, “coding” is the more popular word for it, and it’s being taught in many schools.

McFarland Girl Scout receives Gold Award

MCFARLAND — On April 7, at the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Badgerland Award Ceremony in Prairie Du Sac, Tori Budnar-Chapman was one of 11 Girl Scouts receiving her Gold Award.

The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Once achieved, according to the chapter’s website, “It shows colleges, employers, and your community that you’re out there changing the world.”

‘Catholic Kids for a Cause: Fight Like Zayden’

JEFFERSON — The Catholic community of St. John the Baptist (SJB) School and St. Francis of Assisi Parish recently gathered to participate in a fundraising event for the family of Zayden Gess, parishioners and members of the school community.

Zayden, son of Jenny and Kevin Gess, was born prematurely six months ago with multiple medical challenges along with Down Syndrome. He continues to be cared for at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison.

Summer camp opportunities for youth offered

Summer at the EDGE shines warmly

MADISON — Last year, Edgewood High School in Madison revived its summer camps program for elementary and middle school children.

This year, there are even more interesting and unique “academic” and “life skills” camps, including topics as varied as 3D printing and Arduino electronics, to photography and art, to cooking and baking, to crafts, languages, and outdoor skills, most designed for students in grades five to nine.

St. Dennis School has unique electives program

MADISON — St. Dennis School has a one of a kind middle school electives program.

About five years ago, Mr. Matt Beisser, principal, wanted to find a way to increase interest and enthusiasm in the school. He said, “I remember sitting at a concert and watching a few students stand in the back row and sing nothing. I remember thinking, these kids are wasting their time, and what could we do to get their interest up.”

Celebrating time, talent, and treasure

FORT ATKINSON — Catholic Schools Week is a time to celebrate Catholic education, including all those who support it and those who are learning from it.

St. Joseph School in Fort Atkinson recently took some time out of a busy school day to do just that.

Among a plethora of other activities, January 31 marked the day of an all-school assembly and talent show.

Monona students performing 10,000 acts of kindness

MONONA — Immaculate Heart of Mary School is teaching more than reading, writing, and arithmetic — it is teaching love.

The school recently launched its “Teach Love” campaign.

Principal Callie Meiller said Teach Love is a “showcase for students . . . not only preparing them academically; we want them to go out into the world and be ready, not only smarts wise, but ready mind, body, and spirit to take on the world.”

St. Rose helps men’s shelter

CUBA CITY — The St. Rose of Lima School Family in Cuba City raised money and made blankets for the Almost Home Men’s Shelter in Dubuque, Iowa.

Clare from Clare Cares in Dubuque started Operation Warm Toes- Grateful Hearts for Christmas for the 12 men staying there. She reached out to different organizations to help her. St. Rose was happy to be of help for this great cause.
