MADISON — A parish-based adult men’s basketball league is being formed throughout the diocese this summer.
This league is especially targeting former high school and college players, as well as all adults who wish to play at a competitive and fun level.
The league has been initiated by Fr. John Del Priore, pastor of St. Barnabas Parish in Mazomanie, and Eddie Cotter, founder and executive director of the Dead Theologians Society.
“Our St. Barnabas team has been formed and we welcome all challengers!” says Father John.
St. Aloysius in Sauk City and St. Norbert in Roxbury have combined to form a team as well. Other parishes are encouraged to form teams.
The league hopes to begin play in June and play weekly through the end of July. Games will be played at a variety of venues.
“Players must be at least 16 years of age and do not have to be Catholic or members of the parish team on which they play, though that would be desirable. This is an opportunity to further involve men in the parish and a great opportunity for outreach as well,” says Cotter.
Eric Schiedermayer, director of the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, has pledged assistance and cooperation from the diocese to help with promotion and scheduling.
The diocese will also host an end of the season tournament to be held at the end of July. A women’s league is planned for next summer.
