Edgewood High School goes ‘Crazy for You’

On March 20, 2014
Jim Ottney, For the Catholic Herald

MADISON — The Edgewood High School (EHS) spring musical is Crazy for You, winner of the 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical.

Based on the original Gershwin musical Girl Crazy, but incorporating music from many different Gershwin shows, Crazy for You is a high energy romantic comedy with a storyline designed to be an entertaining background for the fabulous dance numbers and memorable Gershwin music.

More than 100 students are involved in the cast, crews, and pit orchestra. Lead roles have been double cast; for details on which students are performing each night, see the ticket order form on the Edgewood website (edgewoodhs.org).

Classic musical plot

Crazy for You adheres to the classic American musical plot of boy meeting girl under implausible circumstances and unexpectedly falling in love.

Bobby Child, the son of a wealthy New York banking family, dreams of a life in show business, especially as a star of the famous Zangler Follies. After failing to land a spot in the show, he is told to go to the dusty Arizona town of Deadrock as the representative of his family’s bank to foreclose on a rundown theatre.

When Bobby arrives in Deadrock, it is clear that the town has seen better days. Gaiety Theater owner Everett Baker is expecting a banker named Bobby Child to arrive and the only woman left in this town is Everett’s daughter, the spunky Polly Baker, who vows to get even with the East Coast banker if she ever meets him.

Bobby falls in love with Polly at first sight and passes himself off as Mr. Zangler, who wants to “put on a show” at the failing Gaiety — in hopes of paying off its mortgage and winning the girl.

Miraculously, 10 Follies girls appear in Deadrock to help with the show and liven the spirits of the town’s menfolk.

A series of plot twists — intermixed with great songs and tap numbers like Someone to Watch Over Me, I Got Rhythm, and They Can’t Take That Away from Me — ensue before the curtain falls on an inevitable happy finale.
