In vitro fertilization: Do the ends justify the means?

On December 28, 2011February 2, 2023
--

MADISON — Since the birth of Louise Brown — the world’s first “test tube baby” — in 1978, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has become an increasingly common way for infertile couples to attempt to become parents.

At first glance, IVF might appear to be a perfect example of the wonder of modern science. But many don’t understand that this method of creating new life comes at great cost.

Educational presentation

A presentation, “In Vitro Fertilization: Does the end justify the means?” will examine this topic on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.

During this educational and provocative discussion, two local experts will speak:

  • Dr. Michael Kloess, a family practice physician at Our Lady of Hope Clinic in Madison.
  • Fr. Patrick Norris, a Dominican priest who is pastor at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Madison and a former instructor on health care ethics at St. Louis University Medical School.

Dr. Kloess and Father Norris will discuss:

  • Medical issues related to infertility.
  • Catholic teaching on infertility and reproductive technologies.
  • Ethical parameters that must be considered.
  • The value of all life — regardless of the method of creation.

The presenters will discuss ethical problems that may arise with many reproductive technologies, including effects on the family, the couple, the child, others, and society as a whole.

Registration, directions

All are welcome to attend. Advance registration is appreciated.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is located at 401 S. Owen Dr. (the intersection of Owen Drive and Mineral Point Rd., one block east of Midvale Blvd.).

The presentation will be held in the church gathering space, adjacent to the parking lot.
