Letter to the editor (11-5-2020)

Asking the saints to help us

While praying Sunday for the 60,000 Americans who got ill from COVID-19 and the 339 who died I came to a realization.

We live in a time of many saints.

Some 1,320 U.S. health care workers have died while helping COVID patients deal with the disease, according to Kaiser Health News.

These caregivers assisted the sick while putting their own lives at risk. Many others became infected and ill but survived the virus. They too deserve our gratitude.

We who have no training and little skill in caring for seriously ill people may feel we cannot do much to assist our fellow sick Americans, but we must not think that way.

Everyone of us must adhere to the advice of the public health experts we hire to advise us and wear our masks in public, distance ourselves in groups, not gather in large groups, stay home as much as possible, wash our hands often and thoroughly, and help our public health workers trace any contacts we may have with infected people.

We can save lives every day and help our living saints save others’ lives.

Bill Dagnon
St. Joseph Parish, Baraboo
