Mobile food pantries serve rural communities

On September 29, 2016
Chris Lee

MADISON — The Parish Mobile Food Pantry program operated by Catholic Charities Madison serves rural communities who do not have access to the larger pantries in Madison.

Parishioners from participating Catholic parishes volunteer to unload and distribute food delivered to the parish by a Second Harvest foodbank truck. Parish volunteers organize each monthly pantry and assist their neighbors who depend on the pantry for food or to help offset other expenses (such as medical and utility bills).

People who use the pantry do not need to be Catholic or a member of the parish holding the pantry. No ID is needed to participate. In just a short time, hundreds of pounds of food are given to those who need it.

In 2015, there were 54,311 people served and 1,371,746 pounds of food was distributed.

Participating parishes

Parish mobile food pantries are currently being held at:

• Corpus Christi in Boscobel on the third Tuesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

• Sacred Heart in Reedsburg on the fourth Thursday of the month from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

• SS. Anthony and Philip in Highland on the last Monday of each month from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

• St. John in Patch Grove on the second Tuesday of each month from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

• St. John Vianney in Janesville on the first Monday of each month from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

• St. Joseph in Fort Atkinson on the second Thursday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m.

• St. Mary in Platteville on the third Friday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m.

• St. Mary in Palmyra on the first Thursday of each month from 4 to 5 p.m.

• St. Faustina in Pardeeville on the fourth Monday of each month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

• St. Clare of Assisi in Monroe on the third Thursday of each month from 3 to 4 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul in Monroe.

• St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Portage on the second Monday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Portage Fairgrounds.
