Kevin Wondrash

ALBANY, Minn. — Sr. Carmen (Mary) Mulcahy, OSB, 95, died at Mother of Mercy Care Center in Albany, Minn., on January 31, 2020.

A native of the Diocese of Madison, she was the daughter of Sarah (McDonald) and Timothy Mulcahy and was born on the family farm in Darlington.

She attended Georgetown School and Darlington High School. During the summer, she attended religion classes taught by the Benedictine Sisters from St. Joseph, Minn.

She began a nursing program at St. Francis Hospital, Freeport, Ill., from 1942 to 1944. On September 9, 1944, she entered St. Benedict Monastery. She was received into the novitiate as Sister Carmen on June 21, 1945. She made her perpetual profession in 1949.

She studied nursing at St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing and earned her registered nurse license in 1950. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Marquette University and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Her ministry was as a nurse and nurse educator.

In 1982, she moved to Madison, where she taught nursing at UW-Madison. She was an active member of St. Raphael Cathedral Parish. She also served on the Advisory Board for the Catholic Herald. She cared for her sister, Sr. Maureen Mulcahy, OSB, who preceded her in death.

She left Madison in 1997 to serve as professor of nursing at the College of St. Benedict until she retired in 2002.

She is survived by her brother George, Darlington. Her parents and a brother Michael also preceded her in death.
