Sister Catherine Dorsey, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Catherine “Kate” Dorsey (Kenelm) died Jan. 21, 2011, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Jan. 27, 2011, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Kate made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1950, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1953. She taught elementary school for 26 years and college for one year. Sister Kate ministered as a guidance counselor for six years, support staff for five years and as director of a Native American ministry for 13 years. She served in Wisconsin, New York, Montana, Minnesota and Illinois.

In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Kate taught at St. John Vianney School, Janesville, 1962-1964.

Sister Kate was born May 1, 1928, in Omaha, the daughter of Daniel and Clare (Regan) Dorsey. Her parents; a sister, Margaret “Peg” Dillon; and two brothers, Daniel Dorsey and William Dorsey, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 60 years.
