Patrick Madrid to speak in Madison

On August 13, 2009
Todd Burud, For the Catholic Herald

MADISON — On Friday, Sept. 4, Patrick Madrid will speak at the Bishop O’Connor Center on the topic of moral relativism.

Sponsored by the Knights of Divine Mercy (KDM), in association with the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, Madrid’s dynamic talk begins at 7 p.m. and ends at approximately 9:30 p.m. It includes an intermission, Q&A, and an opportunity to purchase his books with a book-signing.

One hour of Adoration, from 6 to 7 p.m., precedes the talk. Adoration will be held in the Bishop O’Connor Center’s main chapel; the talk will be held in the auditorium.

Tickets for the talk cost $10, discounted $2 when pre-registering online at www.madisondiocese.org

Catholic apologist, publisher, author

Madrid’s personal apostolate is to help Catholics fulfill 1 Peter 3:15: “Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you.”

He and his wife, Nancy, are raising 11 children and enjoy the further blessing of six grandchildren. Together, they are effective witnesses for the Catholic faith in married life. Patrick Madrid is nationally known as a Catholic apologist, publisher, author, and TV and radio host:

  • Publisher of Envoy Magazine, a journal of Catholic apologetics and evangelization.
  • Director of the Envoy Institute of Belmont Abbey College, supporting young adults in their Catholic faith through conferences, training, publications, and online activities.
  • Author of 14 books and booklets including the popular Search and Rescue, a book to help bring family and friends back to the Church, and Surprised by Truth, a bestseller containing conversion stories.
  • Former vice president of Catholic Answers for eight years and co-founder of its magazine, This Rock.
  • Host of four EWTN television series and its Thursday edition of Open Line radio broadcast.
Dealing with moral relativism

The title of Madrid’s talk on September 4 gives voice to our sense of loss regarding truth: “Is Everything Up for Grabs?” Our culture covers up truth with a moral relativism that is difficult to identify, and so, difficult for us to form a response.

But Madrid’s talk will explain moral relativism and its subtle forms. He will peel away its effects to reveal Catholic truth, helping us to respond in a charitable but effective way.

Knights of Divine Mercy

The Knights of Divine Mercy share a common goal with Madrid’s talk on moral relativism. In 2004, Fr. Rick Heilman founded the KDM as a men’s apostolate of Catholic faith formation to counter the widespread secularization of our modern world. Knights focus on personal holiness and on helping loved ones to remain open to the gift of faith.
