Sr. Emily Herrington, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sr. Emily Marie Herrington, OP, died September 14, 2015, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sister Anacletus. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa September 18, 2015, followed by burial in the motherhouse cemetery.

Sister Emily made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 7, 1941, and her final profession August 7, 1944. She taught music for 30 years, ministered as coordinator and teacher of religious education and parish musician for 11 years, served as pastoral and prison minister for three years, and served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation in different capacities for 31 years. She played the organ from the time she was a young child. Sister Emily ministered in Missouri, Illinois, Minneapolis, Montana, and Wisconsin.

In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Emily ministered as religious education coordinator and teacher as well as musician at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Portage, 1972-1974, and Sacred Heart Parish, Reedsburg, 1977-1982. She served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation as vicaress of the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 1982-1986; eastern province secretary, Sinsinawa, 1988-1989; support staff in the office of development, 1993-2003, and the communication office, 2003-2005, Sinsinawa; and musician.

Sister Emily was born February 24, 1922, in Dixon, Ill., the daughter of Francis and Mary Ann (Keane) Herrington. Her parents; a sister, Eileen Wentling; and a brother, John Herrington, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 74 years.
