Sr. Margaret Mary “Peggy” Griffin, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sr. Margaret Mary “Peggy” Griffin, OP, died June 8, 2016. Her religious name was Sr. Marie Annette. The funeral Mass was held in the Gathering Place chapel at Sinsinawa June 14, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sr. Peggy taught for 23 years and served as a missionary for five years in Cochabamba, Bolivia, in parish ministry for 13 years, and in various positions for the Sinsinawa Dominican congregation for 13 years.

She made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 30, 1948, and her final profession Aug. 30, 1951. Sr. Peggy served in Minnesota, Illinois, Montana, Wisconsin, California, New Mexico, Texas, Alaska, and Washington, as well as Bolivia.

In the Diocese of Madison, Sr. Peggy served the Sinsinawa Dominican congregation as vicaress provincial of the Southwest Province, 1976-1984, and volunteered as manager of the Country Store at the Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 2004-2006.

Sr. Peggy was born Jan. 16, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of James and Margaret (Duhaime) Griffin. Her parents; a sister, Jeanne Griffin; and three brothers, James McDonnell Griffin, Thomas John Griffin and James Edward Griffin, preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother, Thomas Francis Griffin; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 67 years.
